Alternate Reality

There's nothing wrong with fantasizing about alternate realities or parallel universes; some of the best fiction was and is born that way, and I'm a huge fan of sci-fi. The problem arises when people believe that their imagined alternate reality is actually real...

There's no reasoning with some people. I mean, if you and I were to have a debate, we should be able to agree on the facts that we're debating. We can not debate whether the shade of red on the wall is too bright, too dark or too muddled, when one of us sees a blue wall. We can not debate the degree to which capitalism is responsible for the growth of the income- and wealth-gaps when one of us believes that here exists an invisible hand. And we can not debate the result of the latest general elections in the United States when one of us believes that Trump has won those elections. One of us lives in reality and the other has fallen for the "alternative facts" of the far right and far right media. Those Trumpists will claim that that it is I who has fallen for the lies of the socialists and communists that make up the liberal media, thereby showing, once again, how far they've traveled outside reality because there's no such thing as left wing mainstream media in America, and there are no socialists there. Not in the real world at least.

I really believe that Trump broke the Republican Party. And he did it by telling lies. At one of his rallies he literally said, about the imaginary socialists in the liberal media, that if you tell a lie often enough people will believe it. If his influence wasn't so toxic, we all would stand in awe at this masterful grift... This authoritarian dick has his supporters actually calling for what amounts to a dictatorship; they would like nothing more than to see Trump depose Biden and 'reinstate' himself as the president. Democracy would die on that day, but they don't care because they don't live in the same world as the rest of us. Almost 30 percent of Republicans think Trump will be 'reinstated' in 2021 according to a new Morning Consult / Politico poll;

But the roots of this delusion aren't super difficult to discern. One of the central tenants of the QAnon conspiracy alt-universe is that Trump will at some point use martial law to suddenly consolidate political power and jail his rivals in the "deep state." Powerful people are fueling that belief. Trump's former National Security Adviser, the QAnon-espousing Michael Flynn, openly pined for a military coup last week, and Trump himself is pouring rocket fuel on the fire as he has reportedly been raving about how he'll be back in office by August. And even those not taken in by the Q lunacy may be misled by the various grifters who are promising their election "recounts" are keeping Trump's hopes alive.

They lie about the present, have delusions about the future and try to redefine America's past as well. For proof of their historical revisionism look no further than the 1776 Commission, Trump's feeble attempt at combating what he and other nutty neoconservatives labeled as "anti-American historical revisionism," "critical race theorists," "cancel culture adherents," and "flag-burning mobs" by promoting "patriotic education." To get an idea about how they would like to see America's history taught, watch the below linked video; their version of history is one in which there was no genocide and where slavery was for the benefit of African Americans. The Fox News hosts know that what they say isn't true, they know that they're feeding the alternate reality their viewer base already lives in, they're just grifting. The problem is the millions of their viewers who actually believe that shit. Just like the mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6th actually and honestly believed they were doing the right thing, that they were protecting democracy... I honestly don't know what to say to them, I have no idea how we get them back in the real world...

Let me close by saying that the corporate mainstream liberal media is also guilty here. They attributed to the general sentiment that mainstream media can't be trusted just as hard. Let's not forget how they lied to garner support for multiple illegal foreign wars. They share the guilt for driving millions of citizens into the arms of the fake online news-media. And they're not getting better; they still demonize Julian Assange and they still support the illegal wars. Alternate realities are destroying the real world. It's so sad.
