Let's learn math in a fun way! A Roman game: the 3 in a row

Hello friends of @steemiteducation, a pleasure to greet you following the line of teaching and educating our children in a practical and fun way from home today I bring you a super fun game that I am sure your children will love, it is an old Roman game that is our time is played in a different way but it had its origins a long time ago.

Many of the table games that we have fun with today already existed in ancient Rome. One of them is the ancestor of the known as 3 in a row in Spain, or tatetí in America: the terni lapilli.

Judging by the amount of game boards that have been found in archaeological remains scattered throughout the Empire, the terni lapilli should be very popular. They engraved the board in stone, tile or simply traced it on the ground. They also needed six chips, which could be pebbles, pieces of wood, seeds, small bones ...

In addition, there were variations on the game board. Sometimes it was made up of 9 squares, sometimes it was circular and it could also be square.

The one that most attracts our attention is the circular board, so we are going to make one and to test how it is played.

So let's go!!

Materials:

  • Paperboard.
  • Compass or some object with which to draw a circle, such as a plate or a CD.
  • Colored pencils or markers (markers or markers).
  • Ruler.
  • Six chips are needed, three equal for each player. Chickpeas, beans, coins, stones ... will work wonders.
  • Paper, scissors and glue. (Optional)

Process:

  • Draw a circle on the cardboard.

  • Divide the circle into 8 equal sectors. You can do it by eye or more precisely by folding a circle of paper as indicated in the video.

Cut out a circle of paper and fold it 4 times in half. When unfolding, it will be divided into 8 equal parts.

  • Mark the boxes and diameters with marker.

  • Decorate the game board with words or numbers using Roman calligraphy. You can research on the internet information about it.

Two parallel lines serve as a guide to help us write the letters of the same size.

Investigating on the internet we discover that the Romans began writing only in capital letters. The writing could be done without any separation between words (continuous scriptura) or with separation by a point located at half height.

  • Cut out the inscriptions and paste them on the board. Now we can start playing, we will use beans and chickpeas.

The black player wins !!

  • The first thing will be to choose which player starts, for example, with rock paper or scissors.

  • In turn, each player places the chips in the box they choose.

  • Once all 3 tiles are positioned, only one adjacent empty square is allowed to move, that is, it is not allowed to jump or place one tile on top of another. Before deciding on a movement, one must assess the consequences. In short, you have to think to find a winning strategy.
