Importance of Showing Up

A big part of learning is actually showing up for classes. No classes means no opportunity to learn nor obtain information. In more demanding courses such as science, math, computer programming, etc. if you fall behind you stay behind and have to catch up.

For those who attend after school learning programs, sports or hobbies it is important as well to show up for classes. With after school programs it is a time investment as well as financial as these programs can cost a lot per month.

Taking The Classes Seriously

Showing up is one thing but it also important to take the classes seriously. In my university days, I have seen classmates show up to class and not take the classes seriously. They would watch a movie in the lecture room, fall asleep in class, text on their phones, silently chat with friends and so on. Being distracted does take away from learning new knowledge, techniques, theories and philosophies. I've had a math major friend at the time who made a statement something similar to "Why show up to class if you don't take the class seriously?". I could compile a list of ways for taking classes seriously but I would just reduce it to stay interested and focused as well as take good notes in class.

On Paid Learning Sessions

I do think that parents have a major role in the learning process for kids. Sometimes kids are enrolled into after school programs or hobbies that the parents wants. Sometimes it is the kids themselves that want extra learning services or a certain hobby. Ideally, parents should monitor how their kids are doing in their hobbies and in after school learning program (or tutoring). If the child is improving in grades, skill and/or attitude then the financial expense into the after school program is money well spent. There are cases where the after school program is not effective for the child. The program could be bad, a bad fit or the child has bad behaviour in the form of laziness or avoidance of work.

In some cases, the parents themselves may not take the classes seriously for their kids. The money would be paid for a certain amount of sessions per month but the sessions would not be used. Parents can be disorganized with their schedules and can miss their kids' learning sessions or hobbies. That can be a topic for another time.
