Introduction / Introducción:

First of all cordial greetings to the CineTv community, today we are invited to participate in a very interesting contest and where there is a huge series of films that talk about the subject and that can be considered classics of cinema regarding the labor and social theme, among other films come to my memory, "Modern Times", "Bread and Roses", "Companions", "The working class goes to Paradise" among many others.

But a theme such as work, usually touches the most human fibers of the expectorate, because work is part of the human condition, as Hannah Arendt explains in one of her books.

Normally, when we watch movies on this subject, we often see ourselves reflected in the plots and scripts, since in our daily lives, we have to face thousands of situations related to work, such as harassment, mistreatment at work, poor working conditions, dangerous conditions in the performance of our tasks, layoffs, low wages and much more.

For this reason, choosing a film for this theme is somewhat complicated, however, the same reality of our life can help us to choose a film, that is, a person who is as a migrant in another country and being exploited and working in very bad conditions, could choose the film Bread and Roses, a person who is in a process of struggles for labor demands, can choose Compañeros, while another who is in a company that is going through changes and layoffs, can choose the Working Class Goes to Paradise and so on.

Since on this subject, I could say that there is a movie for every reality.

The Movie I chose / La Película que escogí:

I, personally, chose the movie The Grapes of Wrath, for this contest, the reason, is the current situation of recession and economic stagflation that exists in the world, which will bring as a consequence, business closures, general economic paralysis, high costs, unemployment, impoverished salaries and in turn labor struggles, social crises and changes in the status of life of people worldwide.

This film, The Grapes of Wrath, starring Henry Fonda, tells us about one of the most difficult times for the American people, the Great Recession and its consequences on the poor and ordinary people of that country.

The film narrates how a peasant family of tenant farmers is expelled from the land they have been renting for generations, by the owners of the land, who decide to industrialize the production system to obtain more profits, without caring about the countless families who were evicted.

The film shows us the progress of capitalism, and how the industrialization processes are leaving people and families who do not have the opportunity to enter them, are being left out and displaced. This situation can be transposed to the current reality, especially when we are in the midst of the so-called fourth industrial revolution, and many people are becoming unemployed, or are producing from home through teleworking and other modes of production today.

In the film, the protagonist's family migrates from Oklahoma to California, since they have been told that there is work in the west; however, when they arrive in the land of promise, they find out that reality is not as it was painted, and they begin a pilgrimage to find a place to settle down, to get a job and to start a new life.

But they come across a very cruel reality, based on the processes of exclusion, unemployment, the so-called junk jobs, miserable salaries, very high costs of food and lodging, among other things, which are about to become our daily bread for many families in the world.

The film is a denunciation of a concrete reality, but it is also an ode to a family, which despite all the situations, manages to stay together and move forward, despite having lost everything, house, job, way of life and having been left on the street without a roof over their heads. But managing to maintain dignity, family unity, the value of friendship, the feeling of connection with the land where they were born and with the human condition.

The film has monumental dialogues, the screenwriters of the time were careful to be faithful to some of the most striking scenes of the book that originated the film written by John Steinbeck, among them I can rescue the following:

  • Scene: When Henry Fonda says goodbye to his Mother near the end of the film. "It no longer matters, for I will be everywhere, wherever there is a chance for the hungry to eat, I will be there, wherever there is a man who suffers, I will be there, I will be in the cries of the men they drive mad, and I will be in the laughter of the children when they are hungry and supper is already prepared, and when men eat from the land they work and live from the houses they raise, I will be there too."
  • Scene: When the mother rides in the truck at the end of the film. "I am no longer afraid of anything, we have been beaten enough and we have not been defeated, there is nothing to be afraid of".
  • Scene: Scene: When the mother rides in the truck at the end of the film. "We are alive, and we keep walking, they can't finish us off, nor crush us, we will always come out ahead, because we are the people, we are the people"

Conclusion / Conclusión:

The Grapes of Wrath, is a film based on a book by the writer John Steinbeck, which denounces the suffering of the American plain and poor people at the time of the Great Depression, it shows us the exclusion, the mistreatment of the popular classes by people who own money and land, it shows us the hunger caused by the economic crisis, unemployment and bad policies, based on the exclusion and exploitation of man.

The film shows us how production and profit are more important for the landowner than the human condition of hundreds of families and thousands of people, condemned to be left on the street, unemployed and hungry.

Regrettably, this film, masterfully directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda, shows us the reality of a historical fact, which was generated at the beginning of the last century, but which now seems to be repeating itself, with other protagonists and other realities.

For me, it is a film about the importance of work, family, about the value of friendship, about principles, about the link with the land where one was born and above all about hope, which gives us a fundamental teaching in the last dialogues of Fonda's mother in the film when she says: "We are alive, and we continue walking, they cannot finish with us, nor crush us, we will always go forward, because we are the people, we are the people".

Finally, the film shows us the value of the mother, as the center of the family nucleus and as the fundamental piece of the family.

In short, it is a film that I highly recommend, to be seen and discussed.
