First of all, cordial greetings to the CineTv community. I want to thank you for the opportunity of the contests and more of a contest with a topic as interesting as this one, since work, as the philosopher Hannah Arendt says, is an integral part of the human condition.
Antes que nada, cordiales saludos a la comunidad de CineTv. Quiero dar gracias por la oportunidad de los concursos y más de un concurso con un tema tan interesante como este, ya que el trabajo, como bien lo dice la filósofa Hannah Arendt, es una parte integral de la condición humana.
Personally, I know that there are excellent films on this topic, in fact there are subgenres within the films on the topic of labor, such as occupational health, industrial accidents, harassment, union struggles, migration, environmental damage, gender, among others. environmental damage, gender, among other very exciting areas.
En lo personal, sé que hay excelentes películas sobre este tema, de hecho hay subgéneros dentro de las películas sobre el tópico del trabajo, como lo son salud laboral, accidentes laborales, acosos, lucha sindical, migración, daño al medio ambiente, género, entre otros ámbitos muy apasionantes.
However, in my particular case, for this contest, I decided to take the film, "Bread and Roses" by Ken Loach, British television and film director, specializing in social issues, who in 2000, gives us this excellent film, which although it has some fictional content in its script is based on real events and takes some scenes of repression of workers by the police in the United States of America, for his film.
Sin embargo, en mi caso muy particular, yo para este concurso, decidí tomar la película, “Pan y Rosas” de Ken Loach, director de televisión y de cine británico, especializado en temas sociales, quien en el año 2000, nos regala esta excelente película, que aunque tiene cierto contenido de ficción en su guion está basada en hechos reales y toma algunas escenas de la represión de los trabajadores por parte de la policía en los Estados Unidos de América, para su película.
Resumen histórico de la película / Historical summary of the film:
Bread and Roses, is a film that is based on the struggle of the workers in the cleaning sector of the City of Los Angeles, to achieve living wages, health insurance and a collective bargaining agreement, which would give the workers in that sector, the minimum conditions to live in a dignified manner.
Pan y Rosas, es una película que se basa en la lucha de los trabajadores del sector de la limpieza de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles, por conseguir sueldos dignos, seguro médico y una contratación colectiva, que le diera a los trabajadores de ese sector, las condiciones mínimas para vivir de manera digna.
As mentioned above, the film is based on a real event, which is generated when the members of the "Sindicato Justicia Para Los Trabajadores de Limpieza" (SEIU), organized a group of workers, most of them Latin American and Eastern European migrants, to obtain benefits such as wage increases, health insurance, full-time work with all rights included and collective bargaining agreements.
Como comento arriba, la película está basada en un hecho real, que se genera cuando los miembros del “Sindicato Justicia Para Los Trabajadores de Limpieza” (SEIU), organizan a un grupo de trabajadores, la mayoría de ellos migrantes latinoamericanos y de Europa del este, para conseguir, beneficios como aumentos de salarios, seguro médico, trabajo a tiempo completo con todos los derechos incluidos y convenios colectivos de contratación.
This workers' struggle took place between 1999 and 2000 in the city of Los Angeles, in the United States, and although the union and the workers finally won the struggle and won their rights, there were huge processes of repression, arrests and deportations.

It is also important to make known that the SEIU union, the same union that appears in the film, after these mobilizations, initiated a process of pressure and mobilization at the national level in the United States of America, to initiate the reform of the migration laws of that country demanding that the same be more humane and more inclusive.
Es importante también dar a conocer que el sindicato SEIU, el mismo que aparece en la película, después de estas movilizaciones, inició un proceso de presión y movilización a nivel nacional en los Estados Unidos de América, para iniciar la reforma de las leyes de migración de ese país exigiendo que las mismas fuesen más humanas y más inclusivas.
La película / The film:
The film stars Pilar Padilla and Adrien Brody, who at the time was just starting out in film. It begins with a very particular scene, which is that of the "Coyotes" (Trafficking of migrants), introducing a group of Latin American illegals, almost all Mexicans, to the "country of opportunities".
La película está protagonizada por Pilar Padilla y Adrien Brody, quien en esa época estaba iniciando en el cine. Comienza con una escena muy particular, que es la de los “Coyotes” (Trata de migrantes), introduciendo a un grupo de ilegales latinoamericanos, casi todos mexicanos, al “país de las oportunidades”.
In this scene, the discriminatory treatment of migrants by the members of these human trafficking groups can be seen from the outset, and the business that is handled through the handling and sale of human beings who are treated as objects or merchandise can be seen.

In fact, at the beginning of the film, there is a tragicomic scene, where the protagonist "Maya" is kidnapped by the Coyotes, because her sister does not have all the money to pay for her transfer. At that moment, Maya, a very beautiful girl, is forced to go to a hotel by the Coyotes, where she had to pay the difference of the money by having sex with her kidnappers.

In that process, Maya, in a very clever way, tricks her kidnapper, asks him to take a bath before having sex and they start singing, once the kidnapper enters the bathroom, Maya manages to escape, taking the kidnapper's clothes and arriving in a cab to her sister's house, where she is received by her family.

The film shows the struggle of poor Americans, poor whites, people of color, migrants and other social groups to survive in a dignified manner in the land of opportunity.
En la película se ve, la lucha de los estadounidenses pobres, blancos pobres, personas de color, migrantes y otros grupos sociales, para lograr sobrevivir de manera digna dentro del país de las oportunidades.
The screenwriter, in a masterful way, demonstrates in the dialogues, what it means for poor Americans and migrants to be outside of health insurance, because they do not have jobs that provide these benefits or because they do not earn enough to be able to afford the purchase of insurance to cover their health needs.

There is also a very strong and emotional argument, where Maya's older sister confronts Maya, who was supporting the struggle of her co-workers' union members. The situation is generated when Rosa, Maya's older sister, denounces to the company the organizers of the mobilization and the organization of the workers with the union.
También hay un argumento muy fuerte y emotivo, donde la hermana mayor de Maya, se enfrenta a Maya, quien estaba apoyando a la lucha de los sindicalistas de sus compañeros de trabajo. La situación se genera cuando Rosa, la hermana mayor de Maya, delata ante la empresa a los organizadores de la movilización y la organización de los trabajadores con el sindicato.
When Maya confronts her sister and accuses her of being a traitor, Rosa tells her a number of situations that she had to go through to support her family, and Maya learns that she had to do it so that the company would give her medicine for her husband's illness. Similarly, Maya learns that her sister had to prostitute herself in order to support her family and finally that she had to sleep with the supervisor in order to get her sister the job.

En el transcurso de la trama de la película, Maya, toma la decisión de robar una gasolinera para ayudar a una de los trabajadores que había sido despedido y que había logrado entrar a la universidad, lo que le costó que al final de la película, fuese detenida y deportada de nuevo a México, no sin antes haber estado en las luchas sindicales y de haber sido testigo del triunfo y de las conquistas alcanzadas por los trabajadores.

Bread and Roses, is an excellent film, based on a real event, made by one of the most recognized British filmmakers, in the treatment and handling of social issues, which shows us, the background and management of the exploitation of the most vulnerable workers, migrants, low-income citizens and the excluded of always in the country of opportunities.
Pan y Rosas, es una película excelente, basada en un hecho real, realizada pro uno de los cineastas británicos más reconocidos, en el trato y el manejo de los temas sociales, el cual nos muestra, el fondo y el manejo de la explotación de los trabajadores más vulnerables, los migrantes, los ciudadanos de escasos recursos y los excluidos de siempre en el país de las oportunidades.
It also shows us, through real examples and experiences, the achievements that workers can obtain through organization, mobilization and awareness of their situation.
También nos muestra, a través de ejemplos y vivencias reales, los logros que pueden obtener los trabajadores, a través de la organización, la movilización y la toma de consciencia de su situación.
In short, although it is a low-budget film, very sobering, showing us a reality that today is more present than ever, given the global situation and the high migration processes that exist on the planet and gives us a very broad view of that reality that millions of human beings are living, who are seeing themselves in the same situation today.
En fin, aunque es una película de bajo presupuesto, muy aleccionadora, que nos muestra una realidad que hoy en día está más presente que nunca, dada la situación mundial y los altos procesos de migración que hay en el planeta y nos da una visión muy amplia de esa realidad que viven millones de seres humanos, que se están viendo en esa misma situación en la actualidad.
But this film also teaches us and gives us a tool to help people who are going through this situation to change their reality and to have a more dignified life with better conditions.
Pero también esta película, nos enseña y nos da una herramienta, para poder coadyuvar a las personas que pasan por esta situación para que cambien su realidad y puedan tener una vida más digna y con mejores condiciones.
