Cine TV Contest #41 - Movie That Represents Winning: Victory (1981).

The fear of losing does not exist in a team, or in winning people since they learn from defeats, and with effort, they get better at what they do, beyond whether or not they get the victory.

Victory is a 1981 film, a sports movie directed by one of the most prestigious directors in the history of cinema: John Huston. It is a combination of two genres: sports and prison camp.

For a prisoner to escape from his captors is the ultimate victory, is to regain lost freedom, for the athlete the triumph that victory implies is to achieve a goal for that they fight above all.

The characters in this film won their victory twice over, first on the soccer field and in their struggle to be free from a concentration camp. They formed a team against all odds.

This resounding victory was achieved through soccer, bravery, courage and valor, which boosted the morale of the Allies in World War II. Here the main characters had to decide between running away or finish playing a soccer game which they had hopes of winning.

The character played by Max von Sydow is a soccer lover who appreciates good sport and can give a standing ovation to an opponent's goal. Sydow is SS Major Karl von Steiner, a former Austrian international footballer who organizes a match between prisoners and jailers of the Nazi regime. He is a man of his word with a strong sense of sportsmanship.

Sylvester Stallone is Captain Robert Hatch and is responsible for implementing the escape plan for the entire soccer team. He is a man of his word and with an accentuated concept of sportsmanship, and is responsible for integrating himself into the team as a soccer player, masseur and finally as a goalkeeper who doesn't even know where to stand at a corner kick.

Michael Caine is the British officer John Colby and with this match he is looking for the possibility of achieving better conditions for those who participate and also a way to raise the spirits of the allies.

King Pelé is Luis Fernández and Oswaldo Ardiles is Carlos Rey. Pelé, in addition to acting, supervises the scenes of the final match.

Watching the film, it seems as if we are watching a 1950s and 1960s war movie like Stalag 17 (1953), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and The Great Escape (1963) combined with sports movies like The Longest Yard (1974), and, of course, Rocky (1976).

I went to a Catholic school and the main sport played was soccer, hence I knew who Pelé, Bobby Moore, Paul Van Himst and Oswaldo Ardiles were, additionally, my favorite hobby was already movies so I knew who Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, and Max von Sidow were. All of them are in this movie.

The first half of the match whose referee was bribed by the Nazis, presents a score of 4-1 in favor of the Germans. In the second half the Allied team overcomes the score but is eliminated a goal by the referee leaving both teams tied with a score of 4-4. A penalty is awarded to the Germans and in an unforgettable scene the Allied public sings in the stadium in France the Marseillaise Hymn, cheering the players and Robert Hatch who saves the penalty of the Nazi team.

After the penalty comes the escape, the public shouts Victory, after having previously sung La Marseillaise, the spectators overcome the security of the Nazis and the players escape camouflaged in the crowd.

I must emphasize that the film is based on a true event that occurred in 1942 in Ukraine known as The Death Match Ukraine was occupied by the Third Reich, pitted a team of former Dinamo Kiev footballers against a German team. This party was propaganda for the Hitler regime and although the referee was bribed to be a favor of the prisoners, they obtained victory to the shame of the Germans. In retaliation the Nazi regime executed many of the players of the winning team and others were returned to concentration camps.

It is a film in which we all win since it is exciting, it gives us examples of courage and bravery, with correct performances and a sense of showmanship by the soccer stars that appear in it.

It is a little hidden gem of cinema that, although it is not a masterpiece, fulfills the function of entertaining us, making us have a good time, leaving us with a smile on our faces for the satisfaction of having seen our protagonists win the football game and escape. from the clutches of the Nazis.
