ENG

The perfect role.

Shadow of the vampire is an attempt to reconstruct a famous myth, of course, in its own way in a fairy-tale style. Namely, in 1922 in Germany, the film Nosferatu was made, a cult film and the best vampire make-up that old cinema has ever seen.
The actor playing the dark Nosferatu Max Schreck played the role so well that a legend began to emerge, or surely Max and Nosferatu are not one and the same person. The legend lived a life of its own, despite the fact that the actor normally picked up his role and later played guilty films, for many Germans he was considered a synonym of vampirism. Max died of a heart attack and became the inspiration for the later famous reenactors of Count Dracula.

For many years, the legend and the rumor were spreading simultaneously until 2000, Americans filmed their visions of what it was like to film an iconic German horror film.

The film has many famous names like Willem Dafoe or John Malkovitz or Udo Kier. In production, they focus on the character of Max, who in this film is a "vampire".

We get an attempt to reconstruct the events of how the film could have been made and how the scenes influenced the actors. When it comes to scenography, here we have very nice costumes reminiscent of the 20s, as well as the shooting style, if someone is interested in films, here they show, by simplifying, how the productions were created.

The plot of the film is quite hmm TV, you can feel the director's lack of guidance, some scenes are even pointless and the character of Nosferatu is painfully exaggerated.

Willem tries to put himself in the roles and sometimes you can see that he feels good playing the Count, but somehow it is strange to watch because the film itself does not know whether it wants to be a drama or a horror movie or a biographical vision of the film's production.

If the horror is, unfortunately, there is no scary scene here, although there are moments with Will, he tries with all his strength to make his character spooky, sometimes he comes out brilliant, other times, unfortunately, he looks like he ate a few kilograms of bitter lemons.

(Trailer)
As for Malkovich, it is the director's game and what is it playing correctly, although if I was a real director's family I would not like it a bit how the figure of the great Friedrich Murnau is treated here.

This is one of those films with watching like a movie for Sunday dinner, it would be hard to scare you, also hard to show more biographies is a strange vision of director Elias Merhige who, hearing various rumors, decided to make the film himself.

If you like mythologies of vampirism, you can watch Willem's creation is well made (although his teeth should be better done), the whole setting is also including a country cottage and villagers. And the storyline is very inconsistent and the finale disappointed me a lot, which is a pity because it could be a mega good movie and that's 5/10
