F9: Fast & Furious 9 Review - Hızlı ve Öfkeli İncelemesi (English - Turkish)

Going to the movie theater is definitely one of the things I've been missing the most lately. That's why when my friend called and said: "Damla, let's go to the theater this evening" it never occurred to me to object. I didn't even think to ask which film are we going to see, because I was very happy. I was ready to see even a chick flick 😀

The role of the cinema has always been very important. I owe this habit undoubtedly to my mother. When I was a kid, my mom used to take us to the movies every week without fail. The city we lived in had magnificent movie theaters. Maybe they weren't that glorious, but I always felt like I was stepping into a magical world, when looked from the eyes of a child. When I was bored (or scared), I walked into the hallway. That was just an excuse, because there was a kind and cheerful woman working at the buffet, who always served me ice cream and lemonade. I was beginning to think she was a beautiful fairy. As I learned later, these ice creams and lemonades were actually bought by my mother 🙂

When I turned 14, cinema was an essential part of my life. Unfortunately, when I came to Turkey, I was not able to continue this habit during the school years, but after I started university, I was comfortable with that. There was also no problem when I started working. I think some movies should be seen especially on the big screen. That is, until Covid-19 appeared. I must admit that I suffered from a severe withdrawal syndrome during this period. Watching movies at home imo doesn't quite capture the thrill of going to the movie theater. It's a good thing those days are gone. We got our vaccinations, the cases decreased, life started to return to normal and movie theaters started to open their doors to cinemaholics.

I knew "Fast & Furious 9" had been getting ready to be released for a while. But I was a little hesitant about whether to go to the movie or not. The reason for this was somewhat Brian (late Paul Walker). There was a lot of reference to him in the previous film and I watched it with tearful eyes and heavy heart. I expected the same to happen this time. So I was a little unsure. Do I miss my guess or was I right, you will see when you watch it. I don't want to give too many hints on this.

Some information about the theatre

We decided to watch the movie at "Cinemaximum". This cinema is located on the upper floor of the mall. We got our tickets. Prices from 21 Turkish lira (approx. 2,41 USD) per person. In addition, those who have a Cinemaximum membership can accumulate points and watch discounted movies later. We preferred to watch the movie with subtitles and in 3D. As usual, I forgot my 3D glasses at home. So we had to buy new glasses. But at least we didn't pay for medium popcorn. It was free. It was a nice gesture to win back lost customers after the pandemic. This reminded me of projects that distribute tokens through airdrop 🙂

sinema5.jpg

We had some time before the movie started. In order to evaluate this time, we first stopped by D&R. I wanted to buy a gift for my little friend. Fortunately, there was the book I was looking for: "Time Bicycle" by Bilgin Adalı. Sudefteri had read this book and wrote that she liked it, in one of her previous posts. Thankfully, I didn't have to think deeply about what to buy for the little friend.

Then we decided to go the Konyaaltı beach. The atmosphere was nice. People are sleeping here in the last days since temperatures suddenly increased to above 40 degrees. With the lifting of the lockdown, it's a bit crowded round here till late.

After breathing some sea air, we were now fully ready to watch "Fast and Furious 9" 🙂We went back to the movie theater, grabbed our treats and glasses and went into the cinema hall. It wasn't too crowded. Adjacent seats were left empty, following social distancing rules. We watched the movie comfortably.

Fast & Furious 9 - My Review

I had read that Fast & Furious 9 was an immediate box-office success. But IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes ratings are low. The reasons can be discussed at length. If you're wondering about my opinion, I enjoyed watching the movie, which lasted 2 hours and 25 minutes. I liked the breathtaking and impressive action scenes (especially at the beginning) the music and the performances of the actors. But... the film looks like more a fantasy film than an action. There are people who say F9 is a sci-fi film, but I definitely disagree because surreal details outweigh. I also think that it does not meet the expectations of car enthusiasts. So there are cars, but they're in places they shouldn't be. Overall, if you don't mind the fantastic elements, if you don't think the story is important, if you just want to watch car chases, familiar and new faces and enjoy it, you might even like the movie. But don't look for logic. In fact, I'd say turn off your brain, leave it at home and go to this film 🙂 This may even sound like therapy in the post-Covid-19 era.

You've probably heard the term "jumped the shark". I think that metaphor can be used for F9. I will go into details. But first, I would like to briefly touch on the plot.

Plot:

You don't have to watch the previous 8 episodes of the saga to watch this movie. The film is creating its own story. Well-known street racer Dom / Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) seems to have given up on everything. He tries to lead a quiet life with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and their little son. But the shadow of the past refuses to let him go. We went back to 1989 and witnessed what happened to Dominic's father. Here we see once again very clearly where and how his passion for cars came from. Then the "bad" guys and Cipher (Charlize Theron) appeared with their plans to destroy the world. And Dom gathers his team and sets out to foil their plans. In order not to give too many spoilers, I think it would be enough to talk about the plot.

Director Justin Lin co-wrote the screenplay of F9 with Daniel Casey. If you ask me, one of the weakest aspects of the film is the plot. There are too many inconsistencies. It's hard to understand why do some characters disappear and others not in the last scenes. I read that Lin send the Fast & Furious family into outer space and I didn't believe. It's true. There is a space scene in the movie that is talked about a lot. I think it was very funny. So I found it very entertaining myself. I must say that the characters Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) and Tel Parker (Ludacris) contributed greatly to this. When you leave the theater, the question "is it really easy to go to space" may occur in your mind.

I think cars are one of the things that disappoint the fans. There are no street racing or the more usual scenes with cars. There's still a lot of car chases and car scenes in the movie, just a little different from previous films. So we see the modified Pontiac Fiero in space, where it shouldn't be!!! And cars zooming across precarious rope bridges or cars rendezvousing mid-air with sleek fighter jets. It was ridiculous but it was fun to watch.

I think the message F9 was trying to share was good. It was mentioned that family is very important and family members should take care of each other. Many members of the Toretto family appear here; Dom, his father, his brother Jacob (John Cena), his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), his wife, and son...

Locations:

The film, contains beautiful and exotic locations, articulated with amazing camera work. I personally admired the natural beauty of the fictional Montequinto. According to the story, this place is located in Central America. It was actually filmed in Thailand.

During the film, places such as the Caspian Sea, Tbilisi, Tokyo, Edinburgh and London were visited. There are some beautiful scenes here. In reality, the film were shot in various locations such as Los Angeles, Edinburgh, London, Tbilisi, Krabi, Ko Pha-ngan, and Phuket.

A very interesting control tower appeared on the Tbilisi scene. It was actually the building of the Georgian bank. Very impressive.

Cast:

The acting is impressive. There are new actors as well as familiar faces. To be honest I looked for Jason Statham. Okay, maybe next time. Vin Diesel's and Michelle Rodriguez's performances were absolutely superb. I just had the feeling that I was watching a Marvel movie, for a while. Of course, this is not something that comes from the actors. But especially in the fight scenes, characters sounded like superheros.

To be honest, I didn't find the performance of the villains in this movie impressive enough. In other words they weren't psychopathic and charismatic enough imo. However there was an exception; the "bad" woman. Charlize Theron was so charming. She acted the role of a psychopathic cyber terrorist brilliantly. It's a long journey from the depressed woman of Devil's Advocate to the bad woman of Fast and Furious 9 (and 8).

John Cena is one of the new names that appeared in the saga. The fans must have loved it. Personally, I wasn't too impressed. Sung Kang, aka Khan in the film, has been surprisingly returned. I find the newcomer Anna Sawai is successful. Kurt Russell unfortunately only appears in a few scenes. The name that really impressed me was Helen Mirren with her London scene. Queenie once again showed great acting. It was such a pleasure to watch her in the same scene with Vin Diesel. By the way, did you know that her real name is Illiana Lydia Petrovna Mironova?

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Because I also like to watch Marvel and superhero movies. The music is good, the acting is good, the action scenes are good, but the screenplay is terrible. If you ask me is it worth watching F9 in the theatre? No, probably not. But it can be added to the list of movies that should be watched at home.

Will I watch Fast & Furious 10 anyway? Yes, I will :)

Thanks for reading! Let's drink tea 🤗

cinema1.jpg

Sinemanın hayatımdaki yeri her zaman çok önemli oldu. Bu alışkanlığı kazanmamı şüphesiz anneme borçluyum. Annem çocukken hiç aksatmadan her hafta bizi sinemaya götürürdü.

John Cena ilk kez seride boy gösteren isimlerden.

Fast & Furious 10'u izlemeye gidecek miyim? Her şeye rağmen evet!

Sizler ne dersiniz? Çay ısmarlayayım 🤗
