Letztes Wochenende waren meine Frau und ich wieder einmal in Mainz. Ich bin in Mainz geboren und habe dort studiert. Unsere älteste Tochter lebt mit ihrem Mann und zwei Enkelkindern in Mainz: Grund genug für häufige Besuche.
Ich liebe meine Heimatstadt. In Mainz konnte man immer eine weltoffene positive Atmosphäre spüren, gewiss wegen der Universität und den Studenten, darunter viele aus dem Ausland: Nur 218.000 Einwohner, aber etwa 36.000 Studenten! Eine Rolle spielt sicher auch die gefühlte Nähe zu Frankreich. Nicht umsonst residiert mitten in der Stadt eine Zweigstelle des renommierten Institut français.
Wer durch das ZDF sozialisiert wurde, muss sie einfach kennen: Die Mainzelmännchen.

Zweifellos hat Corona die Stadt verändert, und das nicht zum Guten: letztes Jahr und auch jetzt noch keine Spur mehr von weltoffen. Es ist ja kein Geheimnis: Junge Leute, Studenten, sind eher links und grün. Und so entspannt links und grün sich geben, in der Pandemie mutierte diese Klientel zur Spaßbremse Nummer 1, warum auch immer. Ich persönlich hätte die vorsichtigen Zeitgenossen, die sofort nach staatlichen Restriktionen rufen, jedenfalls eher rechts vermutet.
Möglicherweise kommt aus Mainz aber auch der Heilsbringer, die Erlösung aus allem Elend: die Impfung.

Meine Frau und ich, wir lassen uns bei allem Lokalpatriotismus erst einmal nicht impfen. Bei meiner Frau ist es wohl eine Art Trotz. Politiker und Journalisten betonen regelmäßig, es herrsche ja keine Impfpflicht. Gleichzeitig wird kaum verhohlen Druck ausgeübt, und da gibt es eben Charaktere, die reagieren mit Trotz.
Ich persönlich sehe das eher pragmatisch. Wenn sich alle impfen lassen wollen, warum soll ich jemand anderem die Möglichkeit wegnehmen? So kann ich mich erst mal zurücklehnen und abwarten, ob der Mainzer Stoff wirklich so gut ist, wie man uns erzählt. Einmal geimpft, kannst Du den Stoff nicht mehr 'rausholen.
Zwei unserer drei Kinder sind mit Biontech geimpft. Wir hoffen also bei aller Skepsis sehr, dass die offizielle Lesart stimmt. Mir ist dabei nicht einmal so wichtig, ob die Impfung wirklich wirkt, wenn sie nur nicht schadet. Ein bekanntes Prinzip ärztlichen Handelns ist ja: »ut aliquid fiat« – damit etwas geschieht. Also wird fleißig geimpft, da passiert wenigstens etwas.

Last weekend, my wife and I stayed once again in Mainz. I was born in Mainz and studied there. Our eldest daughter lives in Mainz with her husband and two grandchildren: reason enough for frequent visits.
I love my home town. You could always feel a cosmopolitan positive atmosphere in Mainz, sure because of the university and the students, among them many from abroad: only 218,000 inhabitants, but about 36,000 students! The perceived proximity to France certainly is important. It is not for nothing that a branch of the renowned Institut français resides in the center of the city.
There is no doubt that Corona has changed the city, and not for the better: last year and even now there is no trace of cosmopolitanism. It's no secret: young people, students, tend to be left-wing and green. And as relaxed as left-wing and green people pretend to be, in the pandemic this clientele mutated party poopers, for whatever reason. Personally, I would have expected the cautious people who immediately call for state restrictions to be more to the right.
But it is also possible that the saviour, the salvation from all misery, will come from Mainz: vaccination.
My wife and I will not be vaccinated for the time being. In my wife's case, it is probably a kind of defiance. People keep saying that vaccination is not compulsory. At the same time, pressure is exerted in a barely concealed way, and there are people reacting with defiance.
Personally, I see it more pragmatically. If everyone wants to be vaccinated, why should I take away someone else's opportunity? So I can sit back and wait to see if the Mainz stuff is really as good as we are told. Once vaccinated, you can't get the stuff out.
Two of our three children have been vaccinated with Biontech. So we really hope very much that the official reading is correct. I don't even care that the vaccination really works, if only it doesn't do any harm. A well-known principle of medical practice is: »ut aliquid fiat« – for something happen. So we vaccinate diligently, for something to happen.
