In South Africa, we all dread load shedding… power is cut off for periods of time in different areas, to spread the load, as there is a lack of electricity available. When you have a sweet tooth after throwing a few chops on the fire, this adaptation of @Braaiboy’s recipe, is the perfect dessert to curb that craving!

As we had no electricity on this specific night, most of the photos were taken in the dark, with only the phone’s flash available, so bear with me, as we were roughing it!

Ingredients:
400g Puff pastry
A hand full of pecan nuts
A can of caramel
A can of pears
Half a slab of mint chocolate
1 Egg for basting

Instructions:
Roll out the puff pastry. The pastry should only be party defrosted, to make it easier to manage.

Grate the mint chocolate and crush to a fine consistency. You do not need to add too much of the chocolate. The dessert is definitely sweet enough, but the chocolaty mint flavor does add another dimension to the dessert.

Drain the canned pears and dry them out on a piece of paper towel. As canned pears are very moist, this helps that the pastry doesn’t become soggy. Spread a generous amount of caramel on one half of the rolled-out pastry. Spread the pears evenly over the caramel and pastry. Sprinkle the grated chocolate over it.

Crush the pecan nuts. They do soften a bit during the cooking process, therefor we kept a few bigger pieces to add some texture and crunch to the dessert, leaving a delicious, nutty after taste.

IMG-8703.jpg

Sprinkle the pecan nuts over the caramel, chocolate and pears.

IMG-8705.jpg

Cover the half of the pastry with the assembled ingredients with the bare side of the pastry. Gently fold over the sides to seal the ingredients inside and form the pie.

IMG-8708.jpg

Place the pie in a closable grid and bake on medium heat coals. We first braaied our meaty main course, then we assembled the dessert after that. By that time the coals’ heat was perfect for our delectable dessert braai pie.

IMG-8711.jpg

Separate an egg and sparingly baste the pastry with the egg white. The protein promotes browning and gives the crust a nice shine.

IMG-8699.jpg

Continue with this process, carefully flipping the grid every now and then to ensure both sides are evenly cooked, until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.

IMG-8712.jpg

Remove the pie from the fire and portion accordingly.

We served the dessert braai pie with ice cream on the side, as it is extremely sweet and the ice cream cut through the decadent dessert’s richness.

The ice cream melts on the hot pie and creates a luscious, tantalizing treat for your taste buds!

Young and old feasted on the yummy, comforting dessert, curing us of any sweet cravings for the foreseeable future!
