Make your own bread

It’s funny how accustomed we’ve gotten to just buying everything we need, but it’s really easy and cheap to just make bread. We do it the cheater way, too. The dough was made in a bread machine (which was unused when purchased for $10 at a thrift store) and then later baked in the oven.

You can use essentially any bread recipe you find online, but if you make it in a bread machine, read the owners manual and figure out the order in which you should add the ingredients for your particular model. Otherwise, a regular bowl and some elbow grease works fine.

Autocorrect wanted to write Elvis grease instead of elbow grease. It is not recommended to make bread with Elvis grease.

This is the recipe we used:

  • 4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1 1/3 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 package active dry yeast

Throw all that in a bread machine, set it to “dough” and let it do its thing. We covered ours with a damp towel and let it rise before baking it at 375°F for about 18-20 minutes. The timing varies.
