El tiempo pasó y justo cuando llegué a los 20 años, mi mayor preocupación era que ya habían pasado dos décadas y la gente se iba a comenzar a hacer más preguntas acerca de mi vida sexual ¿Cómo iba a explicar la ausencia de una novia a esa edad?, tales sucesos y todo el bullying que viví en mi infancia y adolescencia me llegaron a construir una coraza que me protegió por muchos años de las preguntas incómodas acerca de mi sexualidad. Pero, para ser honestos, siempre fui gay, nací siendo gay y mi verdadera esencia se mantenía a pesar de mis intentos por minimizar mis gustos. Es por ello que, para finales de mi carrera como contador, ya yo estaba claro que ni mis familiares o amigos cercanos, se merecían una confesión personalizada, ¿acaso los heterosexuales deben salir del closet también?, me preguntaba mientras mi personalidad se cimentaba. En un amago de valentía y también de rebeldía, dos palabras que me ha definido a lo largo de mi vida, cuando cumplí 25 años asistí a mi primera marcha del orgullo gay. Esta experiencia marcaría profundamente mi vida, al punto que por primera vez publicaría fotos mías con la bandera LGBTQI+ y “revelaría” al mundo mi verdadera sexualidad.

That is why, by the end of my career as an accountant, it was clear to me that neither my relatives nor my close friends deserved a personalized confession, should heterosexuals come out of the closet too, I wondered as my personality was being cemented. In a feint of courage and also of rebellion, two words that have defined me throughout my life, when I turned 25 I attended my first gay pride march. This experience would deeply mark my life, to the point that for the first time I would publish photos of myself with the LGBTQI+ flag and "reveal" to the world my true sexuality.

Este hecho me sumergió en una vorágine de sentimientos encontrados. Por un lado, estaba yo lleno de expectativas esperando mi buzón de mensajes o la caja de cometarios llenos mensajes de odio o también muestras de apoyo, pero para mi sorpresa, nadie parecía sorprendido. Por otra parte, el silencio invadió a mi familia, quienes parecían minimizar el hecho de que alguien “había dañado a la familia” revelando deseos antinaturales. El mundo no se detuvo ni hubo muestras de desprecio u odio, al menos no públicas. Esto provocó en mí una enorme indignación, más por mí que por los demás ¿Cómo era posible haber permitido que las opiniones ajenas me hubieran hecho creer que había algo malo en mí por ser como era?, a nadie le importaba mi vida, no tenía que dar explicaciones de mi vida o temer al comportamiento de los demás frente a mis gustos personales. Igual el rechazo social que sentía por ser gay, no me hizo privar de disfrutar mi sexualidad de una manera sana, pero lo hice con un sentimiento de culpa que por muchos años se mantuvo. Y ahora que me doy cuenta cuánta agua ha pasado debajo del puente y como esta generación es mucho más abierta en cuanto a estos temas, reflexiono acerca de cuanto perdemos por el miedo a expresar quienes somos en realidad. Por eso, cuando vi el TikTok de como Noah Schnapp, salía del closet de la manera más divertida posible, no pude evitar sentirme identificado. “Cuando finalmente le dije a mis amigos y familiares que era gay, después de estar asustado en el closet durante los últimos 18 años y todo lo que dijeron fue: ya lo sabíamos”. Este joven actor saltó a la fama encarnando el personaje de Will Byers en Stranger Things, la superexitosa serie de Netflix. Este personaje en particular me hizo sentir afinidad desde la primera temporada, aun cuando este chico era un niño reconocí ese sentimiento de no pertenecer a ninguna parte. El crecimiento de este personaje ha sido mágico, porque su sexualidad, como en mi caso y en otros millones de personas, se va desarrollando de manera natural y nunca es forzada.

"When I finally told my friends and family I was gay, after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was “we know." This young actor rose to fame embodying the character of Will Byers in Stranger Things, the super successful Netflix series. This particular character made me feel an affinity since the first season, even when this guy was a kid I recognized that feeling of not belonging anywhere. Él mismo ha zanjado el tema al expresar en la descripción de su TikTok: “supongo que me parezco más a Will de lo que pensaba”. Con el paso del tiempo ya no hablaremos de salir del closet, sino de aceptarnos y desarrollar nuestra identidad sexual de una manera sana y fluida. Creo que vamos por muy buen camino.
