[Blog #64] Ei, parceiro! One more Pastel, please | Birthday | Brazilian cuisine

Seeexy fellas! How are you? Sharing some birthday lunch sexyness.

Alrighty, ya bunch of monsters. Picture this.

You are sitting on a bar at some paradisiacal beach in Brazil. The blue sky has cotton-like clouds painted here and there. From the sea, a gentle breeze lifts the paper tissue on the table. It’s the perfect table; under a shade and you can have your bare feet touching the sand. The sea is right there, you can hear the waves washing on the coast.

During lunch time the place is crowded. The young waiter is rushing with the orders without losing his best brazilian smile ― sometimes he let go of a joke somewhere and people laugh. Everyone is chilling and drinking beer. There’s no fanciness to order; people shout.

Ei, parceiro! Vê mais uma bira?someone shouts.

And there goes the waiter with another bottle of cold beer. You finish checking the menu and choose to go traditional.

Brother! Uma porção de pastel aqui! (a portion of pastry here)you shout.

The waiter gives a thumb-up. There's no need to worry. He's got your order and soon the portion of Pastel will arrive, together with a piece of paper written 'porção pastel'; also, for every beer they mark with a pen. When you are done you pay.

That’s how it works in Brazil. Except I’m not on the beach right now, and it’s freezing as Antarctica outside. But, hey! It’s my birthday and I want some traditional Pastel. You know? That famous fried pastry that you are more likely to see here.

This fried beauties are filled ao gosto, most traditionals are: shredded chicken, cheese, meat, ham and cheese, etc etc. The ones I made are filled with ground beef mixed with a touch of spices.

Ground beef

  • Lean ground beef prepared with spices ao gosto (salt, pepper, turmeric)
  • Once the ground beef is done, mix boiled eggs (cut in small pieces)
  • Add some olives
  • Add some parsley

Dive them into hot oil to fry 'till the noooice color pops and voila. Don't forget the beer to go with the Pastel!
