Shri Shankara Bhavana - Authentic Mangalorean Cuisine

This place is an Authentic Mangalorean Style Pure-Veg Fine Dining Restaurant and is a relatively new player in the Mangalorean “sasyahari koota”, but they’ve sped up any inertia with offers of Viet & Burmese food alongside the usually humdrum Desi Chinese & North Indian. What’s even more locally exciting is that they purportedly host a list of Havyaka dishes....well, if only we’d known all this when we popped in one February afternoon asking for a “mamuli oota”. Meals

We sat to order an Oota, not admittedly stoked; it was our co-travellers idea after all. Upon being served, we observed that it’s a mix of Udupi & Konkani style padartha here, what with the sweetish-spicy Pineapple Menskai, yam palya & horsegram chutney representing the Udupi Brahmins, & the Hing tinged Dalithoy for the Konkanis (“But that’s the sole dish, not exactly an equal influence” you argue? Well, Dalithoy is Kuldev after all😉). The Kosambari & Papad provided welcome changes in crunch, while the majjige & Mosaru of course, quelled the mild heat. The Rasam was on the sweeter side & the Sabudana payasa conversely(a good thing) not as saccharine. The Chapati & Kurma were standard & on par with other good local joints. The toor dal holige at the end was a bit starchy & hard at the edges, even when doused in Ghee. Interesting, if not the best meal we’ve had.
P.S. Boiled rice > white rice any day, but that might be just us.
