Greetings, my dear friends, I embrace you from afar. I seem to be enjoying cooking (Lol). I didn't think I would be here so soon, in this community of rich flavors.
I am here to show and tell you about a lunch I prepared with a fish (small catacos) that I was given as a gift. I immediately thought of frying them to eat with arepas and salad, a typical dish from the east of my beloved Venezuela. Follow me to see what I did.
I needed to make the dough:
250 or 300 grs of corn flour.
2 glasses of water
½ teaspoon of salt
Traditional arepas are prepared with corn flour. In a bowl or container, pour the amount of flour to be used, add a pinch of salt and water while mixing or kneading. When the dough is compact, it is ready to make small balls that are flattened and rounded. They are assembled in an aripo, griddle, frying pan or simply in a Tosty arepa; previously greased. They are cooked first on one side and then on the other; they are ready when they sound “plop, plop” and turn golden brown. Don't laugh at my arepas, ha, ha, ha, ha.
4 fish
1 tablespoon of salt
1 cup of oil
The cataco is a fish that we can get small or medium size. Generally, it is fried in enough oil, but it can also be stewed. I prefer a medium-sized fish, but “you can't look a gift horse in the mouth”. Before frying, salt the inside and outside of the body, without overdoing it. Oil is placed in the frying pan and when it is very hot, the fish is fried until it is sufficiently browned or toasted on one side and on the other. Some people like it not too toasted.
1/2 small American lettuce
3 medium tomatoes
1 medium onion
1 dash of oil, salt and vinegar to taste.
For this preparation, the tomato and onion are cut into rounds or “julienne”. The lettuce is cut into small pieces. Place everything in a container and dress with oil, salt and vinegar to taste. Some diners add a little mayonnaise and it is also tasty.
This meal was for two people, in each plate I put two fish and a portion of salad. I distributed the arepas; one for me and the two small ones for my husband.
The dish of preference in the eastern region of my country, specifically I am in Cumaná, is fish and any seafood product. The main characteristic of my cooking is simple dishes; very elaborate dishes are my tendency.
4 pescados
