Harvesting and replanting lechoza (papaya)

Quienes ya conocen mi blog, saben que trato en lo posible de cultivar parte de mi alimento, y esto lo hago en mi solar, un espacio que me permite estar en contacto directo con Madre Tierra. Anteriormente he traído las cosechas de cúrcuma, de cambures y de topochos, hoy les traigo de lechoza o papaya.
Those who already know my blog, know that I try as much as possible to grow part of my food, and I do this on my backyard a space that allows me to be in direct contact with Mother Earth. Previously I have brought crops of turmeric, bananas and topochos, today I bring you lechoza or papaya.
La lechoza o papaya, cuyo nombre científico es Carica papaya, es una planta que puede alcanzar los 3 metros de alto, de acuerdo a la variedad puede cargar ya a los tres meses de haber sido sembrada, aunque el fruto tarda en crecer y estar listo para la cosecha, en un aproximado de 3 meses. Toda la planta contiene una enzima llamada papaína que se emplea en el ablandamiento de carnes. Su pulpa es excelente como protector gástrico y digestivo y sus semillas también son empleadas como vermífugo intestinal.
The lechoza or papaya, whose scientific name is Carica papaya, is a plant that can reach 3 meters in height, depending on the variety it can carry three months after being sown, although the fruit takes approximately 3 months to be ready for harvest. . The whole plant contains an enzyme called papain that is used to tenderize meats. Its pulp is excellent as a gastric and digestive protector and its seeds are also used as an intestinal vermifuge.
Hace aproximadamente 3 años, tenía cuatro hermosas plantas de lechoza en mi solar, pero un día pasé a unas personas a que las vieran y a partir de allí y de forma inmediata se pudrieron y murieron. Luego de esto no tuve más suerte con la siembra de esta planta, hasta que el año pasado pude trasplantar dos: Una de una variedad que da el fruto más redondo, pequeño, con la pulpa roja y la planta comienza a fructificar desde muy joven; y la otra es un poco más alta, tarda más en fructificar, el fruto es alargado con la pulpa amarilla.
About 3 years ago, I had four beautiful garden plants in my lot, but one day I passed a few people to see them and from there they immediately rotted and died. After this I had no more luck with the planting of this plant, until last year I was able to transplant two: One of a variety that produces the rounder, smaller fruit, with red pulp and the plant begins to bear fruit from a very young age. . age (of this variety I had previously); and the other is a little higher, it takes longer to bear fruit, the fruit is elongated with yellow pulp.
Desde un inicio no tuve suerte con la siembra de estas lechozas, porque el Señor Morrocoy y su pandilla les encantan las hojas, razón por la cual a una le coloqué un caucho grande alrededor y a la otra cuatro bloques, a fin de protegerlas de estos ataques.
From the beginning, I had no luck with planting these papayas, because Mr. Morrocoy and his gang love leaves, which is why I placed a large rubber around it and the other four blocks, in order to protect them from these attacks.
Por otra parte, cuando las trasplanté, cometí el gravísimo error de no añadir alguna fuente de calcio en sus raíces. La primera vez que planté lechozas en mi solar les coloqué en la raíz una generosa ración de cáscaras de huevo machacadas, así como varios huesos de pollo y de res y hasta unas pastillas de calcio vencidas; con esto aseguré el suministro de este elemento por largo rato. Al no disponer de un suministro de calcio, las estas plantas nuevas no podían mantener sus frutos y aún cuando florecían, éstos se caían a los días. Pero, adicionalmente, de la planta que es más enana, se enamoró una iguana bebé que consume todos sus brotes y no he podido capturarla para llevarla a otro sitio, así que mastica todos los brotes que mi planta ha dado, y lo único que pude cosechar fue una sola papaya de aproximadamente 930 gramos de peso.
On the other hand, when I transplanted them, I made the very serious mistake of not adding some source of calcium to their roots. The first time I planted papayas in my garden, I placed a generous portion of crushed eggshells on the roots, as well as several chicken and beef bones and even some expired calcium tablets; with this I ensured the supply of this element for a long time. These new plants, as they had no calcium supply, could not maintain their fruits, and even when they bloomed, they fell within days. But, additionally, with the plant that is more dwarfed, a baby iguana fell in love that consumes all its shoots and I have not been able to capture it to take it to another site, so it chews all the shoots that my plant has given it. , and the only thing I was able to harvest was a papaya that weighed approximately 930 grams.
Afortunadamente unas semanas atrás, adquirí un fertilizante natural, el cual he suministrado a ambas plantas, obteniendo por resultado que la planta más alta ya esté fructificando, pero la más enana ahora resulta mucho más apetitosa para la iguana bebé y consume toda hoja, brote o flor que le nace.
Fortunately a few weeks ago, I acquired a natural fertilizer, which I have supplied to both plants, resulting in the tallest plant already bearing fruit, but the dwarf plant is now much more appetizing for the baby iguana and consumes all leaves, shoots or flower that is born.
Al abrir la única papaya que pude cosechar, me encontré con la grata sorpresa que varias de sus semillas estaban ya germinadas, aún cuando la coseché estando algo verde. Quise aprovechar este poder germinativo, y procedí a recoger tierra de mi solar, la cual es muy rica y tiene muchas lombrices de tierra; tomé unas cáscaras de huevo para sembrarlas, (esto con el fin de asegurarles calcio desde temprano), a las cuales les abrí un orificio con un cuchillo a manera de drenaje, y procedí a sembrarlas en unos maceteros viejos. Esto lo hice el 7 de junio, creo que si hago todo bien, y la iguana bebé se muda de mi solar, ya para diciembre estaré cosechando papayas para hacer un delicioso dulce de Navidad; sin embargo, con esta lechoza preparé un poco de dulce, que no quedó en el punto óptimo ya que la fruta estaba algo madura, pero sin embargo quedó sabroso. Las cáscaras se las comió el Señor Morrocoy, ¡nada se perdió en esta cosecha!
When I opened the only papaya that I could harvest, I was pleasantly surprised that several of its seeds were already germinated, even when I harvested it while it was somewhat green. I wanted to take advantage of this germination power and proceeded to collect soil from my site, which is very rich and has many worms; I took some eggshells to sow the papaya seeds, (this to ensure calcium from the beginning), to which I opened a hole with a knife as a drainage, and proceeded to sow them in some old pots. I did this yesterday June 7 2021, I think if I do everything right, and the baby iguana leaves my backyard, by December I will be harvesting papayas to make a delicious Christmas candy; however, with this lechoza I prepared a little sweet, which was not at the optimum point since the fruit was somewhat ripe, but nevertheless it was tasty. The husks were eaten by Mr. Morrocoy, nothing was lost in this harvest!
