Making herbal cough syrup for my daughter

Hi everyone
My greetings to you
Hope you are doing well

Ayurvedic Kaadha or Herbal cough syrup

What I am going to share today is called Kaadha in India. Kaadha, according to Ayurveda(The ancient science of treatment in India, all based upon natural things) is basically made by boiling herbs and spices in water to boost up our immunity.

I made this kaadha specially for my daughter who had fever cold and cough for last one week. Her fever has gone away after giving Paracetamol and Mefanmic acid syrup for fever and antibiotics. Doc gave her syrups for cough and cold too but no improvement in that. So finally I thought of trying this age old home remedy. I have given it to her earlier too and it worked well. So I thought of trying it again. Starting giving her yesterday and she shows a little improvement today.

These are Carom seeds, called Ajwain in Hindi, a part of spices found in each household in India. Carom seeds have high antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties. They also boost up your digestive health.

All Black Pepper and cloves. You may add them in powdered form too. Black pepper are being used in India since ancient time to fight various kinds of infections.

Add Jaggery, I have made small pieces of it so that it melt easily in water. It is a made of sugarcane juice. It is much better than the sugar we use normally. It is called 'Gur' in India and it is quite nutritious., as it is an unrefined product of cane juice.

Add Ginger after grating it. It is full of anti bacterial, anti viral and anti inflammatory properties. In India, tea is incomplete without Ginger. 😊

A piece of Cinnamon ,again a major spice in Indian cuisine., that is very helpful in fighting infections.

Now add Turmeric, a major part of Indian cooking. Used in almost every vegetable dish you make, giving yellow color to the curry. It is full of antioxidants and anti inflammatory properties. Many people drink warm milk with a pinch of Turmeric added in it, this too is quite beneficial in cold and cough.

Most important ingredient, Holy Basil leaves. A immunity boosting herb., may be that's the reason why people considered this plant sacred. Holy Basil is full of medicinal properties and is used in treating so many diseases.

Now let the water boil, so that all the medicinal properties of the spices and herbs be released in the water.

After 20 minutes of boiling, it remains fourth or fifth part. Now strain with a strainer. And store it in any container. Use it in 2-3 days. After that you can make fresh one if needed.

I give my daughter 10-15 ml of it twice a day. She is two and a half year old. The best thing about it is that is is safe and free from any kind of chemicals, artificial flavors and preservatives. Also my daughter drink it happily, as its taste is sweet due to Jaggery. If you are adult you may consume 40-50 ml twice a day. Always consume it warm and not cold.

That's all, hope it may help you!
