We've experienced similar delays due to weather (UK) so when we compare photos, we see that everything was more advanced and luscious at this time last year. I grow onions and garlic in small quantities, so it doesn't take too long anyway, but I agree that farmers aren't hand-sowing with such precision, so it can't really be necessary to seat them the right way up by hand.
