Preparing For The Next Gardening Season

Preparing for the next gardening season usually starts in February for us, we we don't count the ploughing, which usually happens in November, or December, depending on the weather and the plougher's schedule. We usually buy seeds and sets in February and start the works in March, but obviously the weather is the one deciding.

Onion and garlic, just as spinach can be sowed during Autumn. Flowers as well, especially those that are grown from bulbs.

These are the tulip bulbs. These also have to be sowed in September - October, in order to have them flower in the right time.

The good thing about sowing these bulb is that it's very easy. You just have to make a hole, about 8 cm deep, place the bulb in the hole, cover the hole with soil and let nature do the rest. Usually it would need watering, but we knew today it's going to rain, so we skipped that part as there's no reason to waste water.

The other flower we sowed today is the allium. What you see on the photo above is from last year. Every three or four years these bulbs need to be taken out and let rest for a couple of months. So you take them out when the plant is already dry, approximately in July and then replant them in September and that's what we did.

This is the allium in the ground.

We had a bunch from previous years, but my dad has bought this new type, which is a smaller one. I don't know it it gets bigger in time, I guess we'll see.

Up until this year we always sowed onion and garlic in March, but this year we wanted to try out the other other way.

We thought why not sow the onions in September and leave it during winter. This is a good solution as the snow is providing a good cover, actually it keeps it warm.

We're planning to have these onions fresh, as green onions and not leave them to grow big. We're going to sow those in March.

The allium is definitely an interesting flower to have in the garden, but what I'm looking for is the tulips. The only thing I regret is the short life they have. I'm going to be back with some nice photos in case our project succeeds.
