Gardening Report - September

It's the middle of September already and very soon the gardening season is going to end. It's kind of sad to see the garden half empty, or full of weeds but that is how nature works. Everything comes to an end and there comes a time when you have to clean he whole garden up. We're not there yet though, there are still a few things in the garden and that's what I'd like to show you today.

Tomatoes can live till early October, if the weather is good. We still have plenty, unlike our neighbor, who's tomatoes are already done.

As you can see, there's still plenty, but the most of it is still green and there's a chance those will never turn red.

Approximately 20% is red or red-ish, like this one on the photo. It looks terrible, but if you cut the upper part, it's still good.

Peppers are looking great. It's not too late for them and a lot is turning red or light green, I mean those that are not red.

What I love the most right now it is this one.

This cauliflower is absolutely amazing. It's snow white, as it should be.

At this point, we have to think about salvaging what we can. Meaning those green tomatoes that have no chance to ripe, are good for pickles. Some use thee smaller ones as they are, but I like to slice them as it's better.

These are two different types. The first, longer ones will not grow bigger but should be red. The second one should be very dark red, almost black. So these are now perfect for pickles.

We decided to save the green tomatoes, red peppers as well and mix it with onions. Three simple ingredients make the perfect pickles.

And voilĂ ! I can already imagine a nice lunch served with these pickles.

The other thing we did with the red peppers is fill it with plums, also for pickles. This is an old trick, many think it's funny as plums are usually used for jam, compote or other sweet things, but not for pickles. Well, try it out and you'll see how good it is.

The recipe is very simple, you can do your usual recipe, nothing fancy is needed. Stuff the pepper after you eliminated the seeds and that's all.

This is how you salvage what you can.

One thing I've learned in gardening is that never take anything for granted. You never know what's going to happen next. Save what you can when it's time and never waste anything.
