Kemenyan (Benzoin)

Kemenyan is the Malay word for Benzoin (resin), an organic incense from the sap of the Styrax benzoin plant, which smells fragrant when burned. Especially in the people of Aceh, Indonesia, the scent of incense is often associated with mystical activities and death. There are 2 types of benzoin in this photo, the blackish brown and the yellowish white.

Both were bought at the market, burned in special pots made of earthenware for a scene reconstructing the way frankincense was burned.
