The City of Zell Home of the Black Cat

Since we recently stood on the RV parking space Römerquelle and of course visited the city of Zell. The wine town of Zell offers its guests the scenic charm of its surroundings in one of the mildest climates in Germany. I and my wife often take short vacations on the Moselle. The atmosphere and the harmony of nature and culture, of everyday life and vacation, of being active to relaxing.

Home of the Black Cat. Why, of all places, the home of the Black Cat? Now I'm curious and google a bit to satisfy my curiosity. I found out the following story about it.🙂🐈

With a vineyard area of around 400 hectares and around four million vines, Zell is one of the largest wine-building communities on the Moselle. The best known location is the "Zeller Black Cat" and the wines that come from it are known all over the world because of their special quality and wholesomeness. The secret of the "Zeller Black Cat" begins in 1863 when wine merchants were out and about in Zell. After an extensive wine tasting in the winery, three barrels were shortlisted. But one could not really agree which was the best. The winemaker's wife finally came into the cellar, accompanied by a black cat.
Suddenly the cat jumped on one of the barrels, hunched over and hissed at anyone who tried to approach the barrel. The merchants quickly came to an agreement and opted for the wine barrel that the black cat was so stubbornly guarding. A short time later, the same merchants came back to Zell and bought all the wines from the same vineyard location as those in the barrel, which the cat defended so fiercely, because this wine had been selling rapidly. The vineyard in which this wine was grown was eventually called "Zeller Black Cat".
