Honestly, football can change so quick. One minute a club is planning for Europe, and the next minute they are worrying about relegation and financial problems. That is exactly what seems to be happening with West Ham right now, and it could open the door for Manchester United to sign Mateus Fernandes.

When I first came across the report linking him with United, I was a little surprised because Arsenal and Chelsea were also interested. But hearing that the player himself prefers Manchester United made the story even more interesting to me. No matter how difficult things have been at Old Trafford in recent years, players still dream of playing for the club because of their history. That alone says a lot.
West Ham’s situation is also looking complicated. With talks about possible relegation and debts around £100 million, they might be forced to sell some important players this summer. That is one thing I hate about football sometimes. A team can struggle for one bad season and suddenly everything begins falling apart both on and off the pitch.
And as for Mateus Fernandes himself, I think he is one of those players people might underrate because his numbers are not crazy. But four goals and five assists in 41 matches is still decent, especially when you remember he is playing in a team that has struggled for consistency throughout the season. Not every midfielder needs to score every week before you can see the quality.
From the little I have watched of him, he looks calm on the ball and also works hard for the team. He also seems like the type of player that can improve a lot with better teammates around him. Manchester United’s midfield has lacked balance and energy at different times this season, so bringing in a young and hungry midfielder like him honestly makes sense to me.
And in today’s market, €35 million does not even sound too expensive anymore as we have seen average players go for much higher fees than that.
I’m not saying Mateus Fernandes will suddenly solve all of United’s problems, but this feels like one of those smart signings that could silently become very important in the future. Sometimes the best transfers are not always the biggest names.
