Siempre me gustó la cerámica hecha en la Isla de la Juventud. Esta isla está al sur de la provincia de Matanzas, y es un municipio especial de Cuba. Estas figuritas me las regalaba año tras año un amigo que, con motivo de la Fiesta de la Toronja en esa isla, iba allí a bailar en las comparsas del Carnaval local. Era un personaje muy pintoresco que vestía de blanco con algunos detalles en amarillo para resaltar su presencia en el Carnaval, portando un colorido farolillo. Se hace llamar Pando y solía traerme estas piezas como regalo en agradecimiento porque intenté enseñarle a leer y escribir y siempre le ayudé porque su familia no se ocupaba mucho de él. The material used to make these ceramics is composed of La Chamota, which is obtained from the pulverization of bricks and refractory stones, especially kaolin, feldspar and silica sand. They also bind it with glass from bottles of different colours to give more lucidity and brightness to the pieces.

Today on the Isle of Youth the ceramists have diversified these productions with more modern techniques and manufacture pieces for the home among them all kinds of pots, artistic ceramics, and white ceramics like these two pieces that you will see, the Yin and Yang that was a gift from my younger sister and that means according to Chinese philosophy, two opposing forces that form a whole, cold and heat, day and night, health and disease.

More and more items from other parts of Cuba were added to this collection. I bought the bell on my last trip to Varadero, which is made of kaolin and I ring it sometimes, as it is said that ringing it can symbolize abundance and positive life changes.
