Dry and harmattan season usually comes with a lot of bad side for farmers and gardeners. The same dry and harmattan season is also very important for farmers. It's believed that any year there's low harmattan in the land, crops and other farming items to be planted will not grow fine for next planting season. Even when the germinate after planting, the crops will not produce big results for harvesting.
During the harmattan and dry season, I don't usually weed my farm like before because harmattan don't usually allow weeds to grow like during raining season. Harmattan period usually makes planted tuber or rooted crops like yam, potatoes, and many more to mature before harvesting.
I believe with little experiences I have gathered about garden, harmattan season is the best time to go into the gardening. Most of the money I usually make from the selling of vegetables I harvest from my garden is usually during harmattan period. African pumpkin, greenleaf, waterleaf, garden egg, and many more vegetables don't usually grow well during raining season because their leaves are already containing a lot of water. During harmattan period the water we usually pour to the garden every morning and evening usually work with the vegetables gradually.
In as much as harmattan usually contribute to farming and gardening of vegetables it also comes with a lot of consequences.
Just last week Saturday, a woman who's among the most respected rice farmer lost her mature rice farm to bush burning. It was not easy for the woman to move on because I believe the woman must have invested much money on the farm. Bush burning is usually constant during harmattan season and it kill many farms.
In harmattan season, there's usually a lot of farm products stealing because those that steal usually finds in easy to go into people's farm to steal. They finds such opportunity because weeds are no longer blocking their entrance.
To avoid me loosing my garden products to bush burning or criminals, I have been able to raise some local methods to protect my farm during this harmattan period. Last week, I shared were I used a bamboo to protect my garden from erosion. I also used the bamboo to protect my garden from bush burning and people from having access to the garden.
The garden cage using a bamboo will not only protect my garden from bush burning and human but will also prevent domestic animals from having access into the garden.
How to make a garden cage
To make a garden or farm cage isn't that simple because it usually takes a lot of time.
We'll have to buy or cut as many bamboo depending on the size of the farm or garden.
Use a knife to tear the green back of some of the bamboo. The back which we teared is what will be used as the rope to tie the bamboo during the garden or farm cage forming.
Use a cutlass or hoe to dig the whole areas where the garden or farm cage will be covering.
First, place the whole areas we have dig with a bamboo. Let the whole bamboo stand vertically.
Start to cross the vertical bamboo with a horizontal bamboo. It's best time to use the back teared area of the bamboo we formed as rope to tie the vertical and horizontal bamboo. The formation of the bamboo will continue till the whole garden or farm cage is formed.

Durante el periodo harmattan, el agua que solemos verter en el huerto por la mañana y por la tarde suele hacer efecto en las hortalizas poco a poco.
Aunque el harmattan suele contribuir al cultivo de hortalizas y verduras, también tiene muchas consecuencias.
El sábado de la semana pasada, una mujer que es una de las agricultoras de arroz más respetadas perdió su granja de arroz maduro por la quema de arbustos. No fue fácil para la mujer seguir adelante porque creo que debió invertir mucho dinero en la granja. La quema de arbustos suele ser constante durante la temporada del harmattan y acaba con muchas granjas.

En la estación del harmattan, suele haber muchos robos de productos agrícolas porque los que roban suelen encontrar fácil entrar en las granjas de la gente para robar. Encuentran esa oportunidad porque las malas hierbas ya no bloquean su entrada.
Para evitar perder los productos de mi huerto a causa de la quema de arbustos o de los delincuentes, he podido idear algunos métodos locales para proteger mi granja durante este periodo de harmattan. La semana pasada conté cómo utilicé un bambú para proteger mi huerto de la erosión. Cómo hacer una jaula de jardín
Hacer una jaula de jardín o de granja no es tan sencillo porque suele llevar mucho tiempo.
Tendremos que comprar o cortar tanto bambú dependiendo del tamaño de la granja o jardín.
Utiliza un cuchillo para rasgar la parte trasera verde de algunos de los bambúes. El dorso que hemos rasgado es lo que utilizaremos como cuerda para atar el bambú durante la formación de la jaula del huerto o granja.
Utiliza un alfanje o una azada para cavar toda la zona que cubrirá el jardín o la jaula de la granja.
Primero, coloca el bambú en toda la superficie excavada. Deja el bambú en posición vertical.
Empieza a cruzar el bambú vertical con un bambú horizontal. Es el mejor momento para utilizar el área rasgada posterior del bambú que formamos como cuerda para atar el bambú vertical y horizontal. La formación del bambú continuará hasta formar toda la jaula del jardín o de la granja.
