«You rethink your life as you live it, just as if you were climbing a mountain and continuously seeing the same landscapes from different points of view.»

— Doris Lessing

ENGLISH

THE EXILED PRINCE

I used to pray stories of virtuous men returning from an unjust odyssey. But my lips were baked by indifference, and abandoned my resistance I fell into a sad sinuosity. I became a quiet entity but gradually I recovered my memory.

From the cavity of a sumptuous room, a man was shouting in a foolish manner. There were songs that bordered on curiosity, from the smallest beat to more colossal thoughts. The tunes did not stop in their successive sequence.

A land, the first touched by the sun, shone in joy, beating flashes of light. On a set of mountains is the fire of its impetuosity, and on an arm of its torrents is the dream of its beauty.

At its center is a great castle, adorned with gardenias, jasmines and laurels, overcrowded in its doors, walls, towers and battlements. Carved with shiny sapphires and zircons, surpassing the Olympic beauty of the Parthenon itself.

From such magnificence, governs a mythical king who was once a prince. With a celestial crown granted by Zephyr and a vinotinto robe embroidered by the nymphs of Bacchus. We are told his court is invisible and has no corporeal form; but they are there, helping with advice.

His wife is a pleiad, the leader of all; Alcíone, who at night accompanies him in his lordly solitude. He sends out constellations playing with the stars that inhabit them. He waves a baton for the delight of his beloved.

His children abounded in that fantastic land; their skins were gray and their eyes amber shining like the sunset. They smiled and sang with joy those songs of the plains that the inhabitants repeated when a new visitor arrived.

During the day, the sky changed color from a warm violet to a soft emerald, then returned to its usual turquoise and then faded into the scarlet yellow of dawn. The flowers did not wither, for they were heirs to an archaic magic that, according to their words, changed the world.

A king that once was a prince would be the successor of a distant and tangible kingdom. But blood jealousy drove him to alienation, sinking him in a tragedy that mitigated his candor. He became an abstract creature wandering through the world of the living.

Since then that kingdom became a story for harmless adventurers. Pursuers of the riches granted by magic and its pardons. Origin of a wanderer who was on the cusp of greatness and broken to an empty space of nature.
