Now and then I like to watch anime. I'm not the kind of fan who watches anime all the time, but it's always a gratifying experience to dive deeply into it when I find one I like. I am quite demanding as I will not spend my valuable time on generic garbage.
Usually, anime is so full of cliché that the more you watch, the harder it is to find one worth your time. Yet, this one managed to enchant me, fall in love with the characters, and stay intrigued till the very end. Not to mention the art-style and the music, every scene is a work of art.
Great Pretender is a modern-day situated story that explores deep psychological topics, questions reality, and beautifully develops the main characters. It starts with Makoto Edamura, a young Japanese scammer, who thinks he's got it all figured out until he himself gets scammed by Laurent Thierry, and his small world starts to expand dramatically.
During the first chapters, the show might seem heavily oriented to the rational side; smart people outsmarting each other. But as it progresses it goes deeper and deeper into the past of the characters, what made them become the people they are today and the emotions that guide them.
It also delves into complex moral themes, that question good and evil, and opens up internal debates on what would be the most adequate course of action in these situations.
I don't want to spoil anything, because this series is also constantly trying to outsmart its audience. You'll find yourself with many surprises and things you assumed as real will crumble before your eyes. So telling you about the plot might ruin it for you 😇
One of the amazing aspects of the art style is that it changes constantly. Sometimes you will see the same scene with different color palettes, or painted in different styles. This helps so much with the storytelling and I had only seen this resource used in the movie "Waking Life", which I love by the way. It moves from pretty standard anime art style to psychedelic-dreamy moments which feel like the artists were constantly on mescaline.
Makoto is a great protagonist with many layers, unpredictable. You never know, till the very end, who he really is and what it is he's after.
The rest of the crew have very distinct personalities and their backstories are all highly compelling. Pretty sure you'll come to love them all if you watch the series.
Anyways, I can't say much more without spoiling anything for you. Perhaps throw in a comment about the music which is really outstanding, with some heavy jazz-rock fusion, great powerful outbursts of musical madness to make the exciting moments as exciting as they could fucking be.

Perhaps I'll spoil something for you. Laurent is almost always smiling. Which starts to become a very interesting trait. He never loses his cool and I think a thing or two can be learned from the character to apply in your personal life. Because he's not relaxed from being lazy, or from not caring about anyone. He's relaxed because there is a deep spiritual depth to his character which you will understand if you observe in detail.
The relationship between Makoto and Abigail is a very interesting one. There is much love going on, but not in your standard romantic understanding of Love. More in the way that they are always teaching each other things and being there for one another.
So, that's my review of this awesome show. Those who follow me probably know I'm more into being in Nature than binging on series, so when I share with you one is because I reaaaaally liked it. Hope you like it too 😋

De vez en cuando me gusta ver anime. No soy el tipo de fanatico que ve anime todo el tiempo, pero siempre es una experiencia gratificante sumergirse profundamente cuando encuentro uno que me gusta. Soy bastante exigente y no pienso gastar mi valioso tiempo en basura genérica.
Por lo general, el anime está tan lleno de clichés que cuanto más lo miras, más difícil es encontrar uno que valga la pena. Sin embargo, este logró encantarme, enamorarme de los personajes y permanecer intrigado hasta el final. Sin mencionar el estilo del arte y la música, cada escena es una obra bien cuidada.
Gran Farsante es una historia moderna que explora temas psicológicos profundos, cuestiona la realidad y desarrolla maravillosamente a los personajes principales. Comienza con Makoto Edamura, un joven estafador japonés, que cree que lo tiene todo resuelto hasta que él mismo es estafado por Laurent Thierry, y su pequeño mundo comienza a expandirse dramáticamente.
Durante los primeros capítulos, el programa puede parecer fuertemente orientado hacia el lado racional; personas inteligentes que se burlan entre sí. Uno de los aspectos sorprendentes del estilo artístico es que cambia constantemente. A veces verá la misma escena con diferentes paletas de colores o pintada en diferentes estilos. Esto ayuda mucho con la narración y solo había visto este recurso utilizado en la película "Waking Life", que por cierto me encanta. Pasa de un estilo artístico de anime bastante estándar a momentos psicodélicos de ensueño que se sienten como si los artistas estuvieran constantemente en la mescalina.
Makoto es un gran protagonista con muchas capas, impredecible. Nunca se sabe, hasta el final, quién es realmente y qué es lo que busca.
El resto del equipo tiene personalidades muy distintas y sus historias de fondo son muy atrapantes. Estoy bastante seguro de que les amarás a todes si miras la series.
De todos modos, no puedo decir mucho más sin estropearte nada. Quizás agregar un comentario sobre la música que es realmente sobresaliente, con una fusión de jazz y rock pesado, grandes explosiones poderosas de locura musical para hacer que los momentos emocionantes sean lo más emocionantes posible.

Quizás te suelte algo. Laurent casi siempre sonríe. Lo que comienza a convertirse en un rasgo muy interesante. Nunca pierde la calma y creo que se pueden aprender un par de cosas del personaje para aplicarlas en tu vida personal. Porque no está relajado por ser vago o por no preocuparse por nadie. Está relajado porque hay una profunda profundidad espiritual en su carácter que comprenderás si observas en detalle.
La relación entre Makoto y Abigail es muy interesante. Hay mucho amor en marcha, pero no en su comprensión romántica común del amor. Más en la forma en que siempre se están enseñando cosas y estando ahí un- para otr-.
Entonces, esa es mi reseña de esta maravillosa serie. Aquell-s que me siguen probablemente sepan que paso más en la naturaleza que en las series, así que cuando les comparto una es porque realmente me gustó. Espero que a ti también te guste 😋
