Inadvertently, the Piles of Paper on my Desk Are Shrinking!

I'll be the first to admit that I really don't like paperwork.

Accordingly, it has a way of piling up, until it screams so lounly for attention that I have no choice but to deal with it. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm a master procrastinator.

If "Procrastination" had been a major in college, I might have taken it. Then again, I might not ever have gotten around to enrolling.

Today, I mad strides forward, however.

Nothing like being on hold with DSHS (the good folks who process applications for food stamp benefits here in Washington state) for 70 minutes, only to learn that the "glitch" prompting the phone call in the first place will have to be handled by someone else... resulting in being on hold for a further 85 minutes.

Yes, we are the kind of economic low lifes that are on government assistance... Covid — and what thereof follows — has not been kind to many self-employed people.

Anyway, what do you do with hours of hold time?

Put the phone on "speaker," set it in a prominent place and start sorting the piles of paper! And I have to admit that I made surprisingly good progress. I might even be able to input enough information into our bookkeeping software that doing 2021 taxes won't be the annual protracted nightmare that it usually is!

Anyway, managed to get much of the "issue" resolved — eventually — and just have to fax in some more paperwork, tomorrow.

Having just hung up with the very helpful Alicia... the Internet decided to go out!

And what do you do when you have no Internet?

In my case, You continue sorting and filing more paperwork until it comes back on! Not that it was my plan to do so, but what else could I do, since I'd already gotten such a good start!

So that ate another 90 minutes off the clock. I did call Wave Broadband (our ISP), but only for long enough to get to an automated message that "there are currently outages reported in your area. Our technicians are on site and working on the issue."

You see, if you actually wait until you get a human, they will insist on scheduling a Tech to come out and check your lines... even though that's not actually the problem.

More likely, the problem is squirrels getting into the cable junction box at the entrance to our neighborhood and chewing on the cable insulation. Evidently, some of the insulation is partially soy based and the little critters like that...

Ah, the downsides of trying to use less plastic!

Anyway, the long and the short of this day is that even though it didn't feel like I got much done today, I actually got a lot done today. Such is life...

Thanks for reading, and have a great rest of your week!
