Orchid Update! - Another New Bloomer!!!

We Have Another Bloomer Folks! ..

I am just a tad late.. but just about 5 days ago, another one of my Orchid plants popped open a new flower bud. Like the others, the color was a surprise (I forgot what color it bloomed last time). One of these times the surprise will probably disappear. I will eventually get to know these plants.

This time .. It was a double surprise. I was surprised at the color and then really surprised at the beauty of the color.. does that count as a double? hehe. What a beauty! But first let me back up a few months. Well, 65 days to be exact!

We noticed the new bloom stem emerging from the crook of a leaf. 21 Days after that the bloom stem had grown enough that flower buds were easily recognizable. At that point I had already pushed a stake into the rooting media and clipped it up for support. I have a couple of reminder pictures below...

36 days after the above right photo was shot, the first flower bud began to pop open. I could see a dark purple color, but was still unsure of the exact color this would be.

By the time I got home that day, the flower had opened a good deal more. The purple started to appear more mulberry like color.

I was excited for the next day to arrive..

I knew that the following morning would bring a fully opened flower with it. And I was right! Now that it was fully open, I was in awe of her beauty. Deep, rich mulberry petals touched with a splash of raspberry at the very edges and at the center.

It appeared as if someone took a paint brush and purposely painted the edges of each petal. I can also see a few touches of orange-yellow at the very center.. Like a little fire is burning within the heart of the flower.

Now that the first flower bud is open.. the others will quickly follow suit. In just a handful more days, another opened. You can see below, the partially open bud. The others are beginning to look a little puffy, and well on their way.

Here is a better angle on that flower.

How About The Plant!? ..

The plant looks pretty healthy.. I would like to clean up the root system and freshen up the mulch, but I don't want to attempt that until the flowering is done and over with. The last thing I want to do is to stress this girl out while she is producing these beautiful blooms, and risk putting her into shock mode. I'll just leave this for later in the summer.

IMG_0296.JPG

The root system isn't the worst I've seen, but it could stand to have a little attention.

She sits on the wall.. between our family room and the breakfast nook. All the other Orchids are there too keeping each other company. I know I keeps saying this, but it really has proven to be an exceptional spot for these plants; bright indirect sun, no breeze, pretty steady temperatures, and all with the perfect view of the back yard. They just don't know they are there for OUR visual stimulation.. hehe...

IMG_0299.JPG

And the best part is these Orchids have someone keeping a watchful eye on them all day long..

MOLLY!!!

I don't think she actually enjoys them.. in the same way we do, but rather in the opposite way. As long as they don't jump out at her or make any sudden movements, she will go on tolerating them. Here she is stopping to check out what I am doing.

Fast forward 2 second and she took a leap toward the floor to get out of harms way!! I moved the plant to a better location for a full plant photo

The Orchid should be in full bloom come another week or so. I can't wait to get the same photo when it's bubbling over with color.

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.
