Curso de Arte Conceptual: Lección 4 (Español – Inglés)

Hola, queridos amigos Hivers.

We continue, then, with the fourth lesson of this Conceptual Art Course.

Today, I am going to talk about the primordial Key to Drawing: Observation.

We think we know how to observe, but is this true?

The difference between a good drawing and a bad one or an average one is in the capacity of observation of the artist. And this ability can be developed if we know what to look for.

IMPORTANT ASPECTS THAT WE MUST LEARN TO OBSERVE ON OUR WAY TO BECOMING GREAT DRAUGHTSMEN.

1.- Look for the Basic Forms in all things.

The basic shapes with which we can build anything are Squares, Triangles and Circles. These can appear perfect, symmetrical, mixed, elongated, shrunken, large, small or asymmetrical, and all can be broken down into basic shapes.

To carry out the tasks in this course, I recommend using free downloadable photographs (without copyright), obtained from web pages such as https://www.pexels.com/ https://pixabay.com/ https://unsplash.com/ and other similar ones, as they have a huge amount of images and are of great quality.

Exercise 1:

Step 1: Open a blank canvas and place any image, leaving a blank space on the right.

Step 2: Convert the elements of the picture into strokes with geometric shapes.

2.- Differentiate the size of things.

This is about organising everything by size. It is interesting to remember the size of all the elements that make up what we observe in reality.

Thus, we will know which things are, for example, very large, large, medium, small or very small, and we will group them into size categories, which will then help us to use them appropriately in our drawings.

Exercise 2:

Step 1: Sit on a bench anywhere you find beautiful and interesting and observe everything around you.

Step 2: Sort everything you see by size.

Step 3: With your eyes closed, remember everything you have seen and classified.

3.- Understanding How Things Work.

At this point, it is important to discover and understand the different mechanisms by which the things we see in reality work.

With this, we would be entering a very detailed level of reality, which we do not normally do or imagine, and that if we study it carefully, it will lead us to a much more advanced understanding of things.

We will deepen this understanding if we can determine whether things are on top of each other, on the side, inside, outside, whether they have connections to one or more elements, what the connections are like, what mechanism moves or stops them, where and by what means they are joined, what materials are involved, what they would look like on their own, and many other questions.

The deeper our exploration, the more knowledge we will gain.

Exercise 3:

Step 1: Open a blank canvas and place any image with different devices on it, leaving a blank space to the right.

Step 2: Analyse the different components of the image.

Step 3: Choose an area of the image and detail the elements that compose it.

4.- Identify the Colour of Things:

We see many colours in the real world. Everything contains thousands of colours mixed together. Sometimes a colour that looks green is really yellow. One we think of as brown is mostly orange. Another that we see as blue is grey.

All elements in nature have gradient colours. Flat colours do not exist in reality.

If we learn to recognise the true colours we see and the gradations they form, we will make a big step forward in our drawings. This requires a lot of practice.

Exercise 4:

Step N° 1: Open a blank canvas and place any image, leaving a space on the right blank.

Step N° 2: Analyse the different colours of the picture.

Step N° 3: Paint the colours you see without copying them from the picture and say to which sector they correspond.

Step N° 4: Compare with the eyedropper if you have chosen the right colours.

Step N° 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you understand the colours you have chosen.
