Leaving the road behind.

After traveling for several hours I was feeling a bit exhausted, especially now that I had more than half an hour of driving through a desert that seemed endless. Luckily, I knew that I was not far from my destination, so I decided to turn up the music and put the pedal to the metal, hoping that this would shorten my trip.

I used to enjoy traveling with my family, but this time, my wife told me that she couldn't come with me due to commitments with the kids at school. Since I knew that the kids were still in exam season, I knew that this time I would have to travel alone.

At least it would help me to clear my mind. And to take advantage of a guilt-free getaway.

When I told my neighbor about my plans, he offered to lend me his truck for more comfort on the road, an offer I accepted immediately, traveling in the small family car for long trips was not very comforting for me.

I knew that traveling at night was not a very good idea, I had heard so many urban legends about bad omens and scares that usually torment men. I can't deny that the idea made me shudder a little, but I pushed those thoughts aside and simply imagined myself arriving at my hotel, leaving my luggage and going down to have a drink by the pool.

Everything seemed normal, when suddenly I noticed in the distance some detour signs on the road, and the impossibility to move forward due to a collapse of a hill, but apparently they had enabled a dirt road that connected further down the road.

Honestly, after driving 3 hours straight, the thought of turning back was not an option. So I didn't give it much thought and rerouted my way down the dirt road without knowing the road well.

Of all the things that can happen to you, getting stranded on an unfamiliar road, as night begins to fall, is an idea that doesn't cross your mind. Yet there I was, with a flat tire, and as I looked for a spare, I realized I didn't have one either.

I was running out of ideas and patience, I looked for my phone to make a call for a tow truck and to my surprise, I had no signal on that desolate road either.

I leaned back in the car to ponder my options, rolling on the rubber was only guaranteed to damage the rim, and I couldn't afford that. However, my only option now was to head out onto the main road in search of a signal.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a motorcycle, then more motorcycles began to be heard arriving in the distance.

I could only think of one thing, I had walked into a trap.

I desperately looked for a place to hide as I listened to the motorcycles getting closer and closer.

I started to run as fast as I could towards a big dune that was high enough to hide me while the motorcycles continued on their way.

I don't know how much time passed, but when I realized I already had three motorized men cornering me against the floor, with masks hiding their faces and menacing eyes that seemed to contain a thousand demons ready to torture me.

Behind me, I heard a familiar voice, and then I felt the cold of a cannon leaning against the back of my neck.

As I turned my head to check who was responsible for this, I noticed my neighbor smiling from ear to ear, but with a cynical and amused expression on his face. As I looked into his eyes, every part of my being felt fear, I felt that I didn't know the person in front of me. And that an imminent death was looming over me.

—Neighbor, neighbor, what are you doing here so far from home? —He said as he held the gun against my head and looked at me with his empty eyes. — Doesn't he know that you can't leave your wife and children alone?

I tried to ask him what was going on, if it was a bad joke. But he wouldn't listen to me, and kept talking and laughing to himself.

—Don't worry, don't worry, I'll take good care of them. As well as I take care of them every day when you are too busy being someone "important," —He said with a sarcastic tone.

Suddenly and as if he realized that he had me in front of him, his expression changed, and looking me straight in the eyes he asked me

— What was the last thing your wife said to you this morning? Didn't she tell you to please not leave?

I began to remember the words of my wife who had asked me to cancel my trip for another time when we could all go together. But she always did the same thing, and I didn't want to wait any longer, I wanted to escape from her, from everyone.

— You should have listened to her, because that was your last chance to survive another day.. — He asked me to stand up, and he took me by the hand. — This one I'm giving you, run and run away, like you always do, but this time, try to survive our shots.

— The scene fades.—

In the distance you see a person running in the desert, then you hear a gunshot and the stillness returns to the desert.
