Occasionally, on a climbing plant of the genus Mansoa that is in my house, I see wasps of a predominantly bluish-black color. One day I decided to capture photographs of them and to find out more about them in the literature.

Ocasionalmente, sobre una planta enredadera del género Mansoa que se encuentra en mi casa, veo a unas avispas de color predominantemente negro-azulado. Un día decidí capturarle fotografías y averiguar en la literatura sobre ellas.

The wasp belongs to the genus Synoeca, which is a genus of swarm-forming neotropical social wasps with five described species: Synoeca chalibea, Synoeca virginea, Synoeca surinama, Synoeca septentrionalis and Synoeca cyanea.

Las avispa pertenece al género Synoeca, que es un género de avispas sociales neotropicales formadoras de enjambres con cinco especies descritas: Synoeca chalibea, Synoeca virginea, Synoeca surinama, Synoeca septentrionalis y Synoeca cyanea.

The species of this genus display a vigorous defense of their nests accompanied by a painful sting. In the species Synoeca septentrionalis, the sting is extremely painful and reaches the top level of "4" on the "Schimdt pain scale". Their nests are directly attached to the substrate and have a convex envelope that may have regular transverse corrugations resembling the back of an armadillo (Dasypodidae). The genus is broadly distributed in the Neotropical region, ranging from central Mexico down to northern Argentina.

Las especies de este género muestran una vigorosa defensa de sus nidos acompañada de una dolorosa picadura. En la especie Synoeca septentrionalis, la picadura es extremadamente dolorosa y alcanza el nivel máximo de "4" en la "escala de dolor de Schimdt". Sus nidos están directamente adheridos al sustrato y tienen una envoltura convexa que puede presentar ondulaciones transversales regulares que se asemejan al lomo de un armadillo (Dasypodidae). El género está ampliamente distribuido en la región neotropical, desde el centro de México hasta el norte de Argentina.

To try to determine the species in the photographs I first searched the historical biogeography and found that Synoeca virginea is restricted to the South America Amazonian rainforest; Synoeca chalibea is also occurs in the South America Amazonian rainforest, but can be found in Costa Rica and Panama. Synoeca surinama is widely distributed in South American rainforests and in the Brazilian savannah. Synoeca septentrionalis is distributed from northwestern South America through Central America and into central Mexico, although specimens have been found in the Atlantic Forest. Synoeca cyanea is the only species restricted to eastern South America in Brazil. Based on biogeography, it seems that only Synoeca cyanea can be excluded in Venezuela. Regarding the other four species, although it has been documented that Synoeca chalibea, Synoeca virginea, Synoeca surinama, Synoeca septentrionalis are known from Venezuela, some authors have pointed out that often some specimens are misidentified in collections or misclassified, for example Synoeca septentrionalis as Synoeca surinama or Synoeca cyanea, since these are morphologically similar species.

Para tratar de determinar la especie en las fotografías primero indagué en la biogeografía histórica y encontré que Synoeca virginea está restringida a la selva amazónica de Sudamérica; Synoeca chalibea también se encuentra en la selva amazónica de Sudamérica, pero también en Costa Rica y Panamá. Synoeca surinama está ampliamente distribuida en las selvas tropicales sudamericanas y en la sabana brasileña. Synoeca septentrionalis se distribuye desde el noroeste de Sudamérica a través de Centroamérica y hasta el centro de México, aunque se han encontrado especímenes en el Bosque Atlántico. Synoeca cyanea es la única especie que está restringida a la parte oriental de Sudamérica en Brasil. Con base en la biogeografía pareciera que solo puede excluirse en Venezuela a la especie Synoeca cyanea. En relación con las otras cuatro especies, aunque se ha documentado que Synoeca chalibea, Synoeca virginea, Synoeca surinama, Synoeca septentrionalis se conocen en Venezuela, algunos autores han señalado que a menudo algunos especímenes son mal identificados en las colecciones o clasificados erróneamente, por ejemplo Synoeca septentrionalis como Synoeca surinama o Synoeca cyanea, ya que son especies morfológicamente similares.

Based on the morphological characters, the species Synoeca chalibea and Synoeca virginea could clearly be discarded because they present yellow coloration on the body. In conclusion, the species in the photographs could be Synoeca surinama or Synoeca septentrionalis. I emphasize that one way to differentiate between these two species is by observing whether or not its external morphology has a punctation on the head, but to see that you need a microscope, and the photographs did not allow me to differentiate the species, however, I show the public domain images of a research where you can see the differences of punctation on the head between Synoeca surinama and Synoeca septentrionalis. Synoeca surinama has little or no punctation on the head while Synoeca septentrionalis has much punctation on the head.

Basado en los caracteres morfológicos, claramente se pudieran descartar a las especies Synoeca chalibea y Synoeca virginea porque presentan coloración amarilla en el cuerpo. En conclusión, la especie en las fotografías pudiera ser Synoeca surinama o Synoeca septentrionalis. Destaco que una forma de diferenciar entre estas dos especies es observando si en su morfología externa tiene o no tiene un punteado en la cabeza, pero para ver eso es necesario un microscopio, y las fotografías no me permitieron diferenciar la especie, no obstante, muestro las imágenes de dominio público de una investigación donde se aprecian las diferencias de punteado en la cabeza entre Synoeca surinama y Synoeca septentrionalis. Synoeca surinama presenta poca o ninguna puntuación en la cabeza mientras que Synoeca septentrionalis presenta mucha puntuación en la cabeza.

I should point out that the photographs I captured only show a worker wasp collecting pieces of dried flowers on the plant of the genus Mansoa, most likely to take them to its nest for others to use in the enlargement of an existing nest or for the construction of a new nest. In this regard, I will comment on the differentiation of castes, the architecture of the nest and their behavior when a disturbance occurs in the vicinity of the nest. I will support myself by alternating with images from other authors.

The adult wasp population in a nest of the species Synoeca surinama consists of queens or reproductives, workers and males. In a nest there can be variations in the total number of adults that can reach values of more than 100, 200, 300 and even more than 800 adult wasps. This is due in part to the size of the nest.

La población de avispas adultas en un nido de la especie Synoeca surinama se compone de reinas o reproductoras, obreras y machos. En un nido puede haber variaciones en el total de adultos que puede alcanzar valores de más de 100, 200, 300 e incluso hasta más de 800 avispas adultas. Esto se debe en parte al tamaño del nido.

The wasps of the genus Synoeca belong to the tribe Epiponini (formerly known as Polybiini), in this tribe there is the presence of multiple queens (polygyny) in a nest, which are the reproducers in charge of oviposition, but also in a nest there can be only one queen (monogyny). For example, in the case of Synoeca surinama it has been shown that in this species there are alternating periods of "polygyny" and "monogyny". In this condition, a strategy of preservation of the species is possible that allows a periodic aggregation and subsequent migration of several individuals of the colony together with one or several queens, as a response to the pressure exerted by the natural enemies of the species and that promotes the increase and development of the colonies.

Las avispas del género Synoeca pertenecen a la tribu Epiponini (anteriormente conocida como Polybiini), en esa tribu existe la presencia de múltiples reinas (poliginia) en un nido que son las reproductoras encargadas de la ovoposición, pero también en un nido puede haber una sola reina (monoginia). Por ejemplo en el caso Synoeca surinama se ha demostrado que en esa especie se alternan periodos de "poliginia" y "monoginia". En esta condición, es posible una estrategia de preservación de la especie que permita una agregación periódica y posterior migración de varios individuos de la colonia junto a una o varias reinas, como respuesta a la presión ejercida por los enemigos naturales de la especie y que promueva el incremento y desarrollo de las colonias.

Queens maintain their position through ritualized displays of dominance, namely abdomen-bending, a lateral hinging at the waist which bears a resemblance to a stinging posture; this can be seen in the following composite image in the letter A. The queens and workers can be morphologically identical or very similar; this has been evidenced in the species Synoeca septentrionalis, just like in Synoeca chalibea, Synoeca surinama and Synoeca cyanea.

Las reinas mantienen su posición a través de demostraciones rituales de dominación, concretamente la flexión del abdomen, una articulación lateral en la cintura que se asemeja a una postura de picadura; esto se puede ver en la siguiente imagen compuesta en la letra A. Queens display aggressively toward one another, often on the margins of the nest, but bending is also elicited by the approach of workers who engage in a ritualized act of their own: the spasmodic "queen-dance", interpreted as an act of "arrested or inhibited aggression" which, if released, can give way to attacks toward subordinate behaving queens. Defeated queens, after passing through a period of idleness, may become workers until eventually only one queen remains.

In the composite image above, one can also see, in letter B, an aggressive defense response in a three-compartment nest, in letter C, a single-compartment nest with the envelope removed, and in letter D, a massive 6- or 7-compartment nest. In all cases, nest expansion was upward (yellow arrow) and nest entrance/exit is indicated by the red arrows.

En la imagen compuesta anterior también se puede ver, en la letra B, una respuesta de defensa agresiva en un nido de tres compartimientos, en la letra C, un nido de un solo compartimiento con la envoltura retirada, y en la letra D, un nido masivo de 6 o 7 compartimientos. There is evidence suggesting the formation of periodic swarms produced in the nests of Synoeca surinama. That is, the disappearance of queens, the presence of young workers and the absence of old workers in some nests and the deficit of emergents in relation to the total number of adults in the nest.

Hay pruebas que sugieren la formación de enjambres periódicos producidos en los nidos de Synoeca surinama. Es decir, la desaparición de reinas, la presencia de obreras jóvenes y la ausencia de obreras viejas en algunos nidos y el déficit de emergentes en relación con el número total de de adultos en el nido.

Worker wasps are present in the greatest quantities in a Synoeca surinama nest. For example, if the total number of adults in a nest is 255, 240 worker wasps may be present; if the total number of adults in a nest is 614, 553 worker wasps may be present. It should be noted that Synoeca surinama has been documented to have clearly larger workers than Synoeca septentrionalis, suggesting a large variation in body size among species.

Las avispas obreras son las que se encuentran presentes en mayores cantidades en un nido de Synoeca surinama. A manera de ejemplo, si en un nido el número total de adultos es de 255, pueden estar presentes 240 avispas obreras, si en un nido el número total de adultos es de 614, pueden estar presentes 553 avispas obreras. Cabe destacar que para la especie Synoeca surinama se ha documentado que tiene obreras claramente más grandes que las de Synoeca septentrionalis, lo que sugiere una gran variación de tamaño corporal entre cada especie.

Males in a nest are always present in smaller quantities. The percentage of adult males in relation to the total number of adults in a nest can be 1.10; 2.75; 5.06; 9.28; and even 24.03 %, and not necessarily this ratio is a function of a large number of wasps in the nest, that is, a nest can have 255 adults and the percentage ratio of males be 2.75 (7 males), or the nest can have 614 adults and the percentage ratio of males be 9.28 (57 males). It should be noted that for the species Synoeca septentrionalis it has been documented that, compared to queens and workers, males have a significantly smaller head and shorter wings.

Los machos en un nido siempre están presentes en menores cantidades. I will comment briefly on observations documented by a researcher related to the copulation behavior of males of Synoeca surinama. The researcher observed on two occasions, in a Synoeca surinama nest under construction, a fight between wasps, and noted that it was caused by the nest workers attacking another individual of the same species. On the first occasion, the two individuals, attacked and attacker, fell to the ground, from where a few seconds later they separated. On both occasions he observed that the males behaved in a characteristic manner, perching on bushes at a distance of 3.0 meters to 1.5 meters from the nest and at a height of 2.5 meters (nest height), and also remained immobile in the place for 20 minutes or more.

He observed that when a female flew close to the nest and passed by where the male was perched, the male would chase it up to 0.30 meters away. Sometimes the flight of the male lasted 5 minutes and then the male would return to perch on the leaves of the bushes. It was also noted that, in some cases, the male flew at the same height as the nest towards a female, possibly attempting copulation. On the occasions when the researcher observed this behavior, the male was rejected by the female.

Observó que cuando una hembra se acercaba volando al nido y pasaba por donde estaba posado el macho, éste la perseguía hasta 0,30 metros de distancia. A veces el vuelo del macho duraba 5 minutos para luego el macho volver a posarse en las hojas de los arbustos. También fue notado que, en algunos casos, el macho voló a la misma altura del nido hacia una hembra, posiblemente intentando la cópula. En las ocasiones en que el investigador observó este comportamiento, el macho fue rechazado por la hembra.

The researcher also noted in his documented work that the repelled male insisted on copulating, trying to join its genitals with those of the female, but the attacked female grabbed it and began biting its wings and then started a brief fight, which caused a disturbance in the nest. When this happened, almost immediately, other worker wasps came to the aid of the attacked female. Likewise, the male was also attacked by other workers, who bit its wings, legs and antennae, and after this brief fight between the workers and the male, the male fell to the ground, taking the assaulted worker with it, and then they separated. Already on the ground and separated from the female, the male walked about 0.30 meters and, after a brief rest, returned to a bush near the nest.

Despite being repelled and attacked, the males continue to fly around the nest, and often the worker wasps can detect the presence of the male flying overhead and the workers attack them to make them flee. The commented behavior of the males is evidently a copulatory function.

Between species, the appearance of the nests may be similar, for example, the nest of Synoeca surinama is similar to that of Synoeca septentrionalis with a central-dorsal ridge. However, the nest of Synoeca surinama has a keel instead of a groove. Nests can be found attached to tree trunks or rocks, at heights of 1.7, 2.1 and 6.0 meters from the ground. The following image corresponds to a nest of Synoeca septentrionalis.

Entre especies, la apariencia de los nidos pude ser similar, por ejemplo, el nido de Synoeca surinama es similar al de Synoeca septentrionalis con una cresta central-dorsal. Sin embargo, el nido de Synoeca surinama tiene una quilla en lugar de una ranura. Los nidos se puden encontrar pegados a troncos de los árboles o rocas, a alturas de 1,7; 2,1 y 6,0 metros del suelo. The angle of inclination of the substrate, or site where the nest will be constructed, determines the slope the nest should have when it is constructed. Synoeca surinama nests can have a slope between 0º and 90º with the access opening directed upward or parallel to the ground. Any other position outside this pattern is not characteristic of nests of this species. These wasps seem to have a certain preference in the choice of substrate, which will determine the angle of inclination of the nest, because in measurements made in 45 nests the angles of inclination were between 5º and 45º, and in another 9 nests they were on substrates with angles of inclination between 46º and 90º.

El ángulo de inclinación del sustrato, o lugar donde se construirá el nido, determina la pendiente que debe tener el nido cuando se construye. Los nidos de Synoeca surinama pueden tener una inclinación entre 0º y 90º con la abertura de acceso dirigida hacia arriba o paralela al suelo. Cualquier otra posición fuera de este patrón no es característica de los nidos de esta especie. Estas avispas parece tienen cierta preferencia en la elección del sustrato, que determinará el ángulo de inclinación del nido, porque en mediciones realizadas en 45 nidos los ángulos de inclinación estaban entre 5º y 45º, y en otros 9 nidos estaban en sustratos con ángulos de inclinación entre 46º y 90º.

Synoeca surinama nests, initially, are a simple chamber or compartment attached directly to the surface of a trunk, wall, or leaf, with a dome-shaped envelope rising from or near the margin of the cells, in which the entrance is higher up. Nests can be found with a single chamber, two, three, five, and even six or seven as in the image already shown (letter D). All chambers are covered with an envelope that has characteristic corrugations on each side of the midline (or keel). The characteristic corrugated shape of the envelope is given by its elevation, starting from the cells at the most peripheral base and maintaining a hemicircular shape, forming an arch at the outer margin. The middle portion of the envelope (keel) is the strongest and most resistant region, resembling the shape of a ship's keel. The following image corresponds to a nest of Synoeca cyanea.

Los nidos de Synoeca surinama, inicialmente, son una cámara o compartimiento simple adherido directamente a la superficie de un tronco, pared o una hoja, con una envoltura en forma de cúpula que se eleva desde o cerca del margen de las celdas, en la que la entrada está más arriba. Se pueden encontrar nidos con una sola cámara, dos tres, cinco, e incluso seis o siete como en la imagen ya mostrada (letra D). Todas las cámaras están cubiertas con una envoltura que presenta ondulaciones características a cada lado de la línea media (o quilla). La forma ondulada característica de la envoltura viene dada por su elevación, a partir de las celdas de la base más periférica y que mantienen una forma hemicircular, formando un arco en el margen exterior. La porción media de la envoltura (quilla) es la región más fuerte y resistente, asemejándose a la forma de la quilla de un barco. La imagen siguiente corresponde a un nido de Synoeca cyanea.

The cells and base cells within each chamber have different diameters and show different heights, which vary according to the age of the nest and the size of the larvae or pupae. The more central cells have greater height compared to the base cells. The hexagonal shape is predominant in the cells and base cells, except in those at the margins where the outer walls are semicircular. In old nests, which contain mainly immature pupae or late larval stages, the cells are in several rows. Surrounding these rows of cells are usually two or three rows of base cells on either side and above the group of cells in the different chambers. In the first chamber, the rows of base cells are presented laterally and inferiorly. The cells and base cells of all chambers have the same row orientation due to their hexagonal shape, where each side serves as a wall for two contiguous cells or base cells.

When there are nests with two or more contiguous chambers, the cells and base cells maintain the same orientation and arrangement in contiguous rows in view of which, for the construction of the second or more chambers, the wasps take as a pattern the corrugations of the immediately preceding envelope overlapping the new envelope and covering the nest access opening of the older chamber with the new envelope. As the nest grows, the wasps destroy the upper part of the envelope and the lower part of the region where the access entrance was located until the envelope is truncated, resembling an arch when viewed from the front. This truncation of the lower envelope allows the continuity of the arrangement of the cells, free access for the wasps and communication between contiguous chambers.

Cuando hay nidos con dos o más cámaras contiguas, las celdas y las celdas base mantienen la misma orientación y disposición en filas contiguas en vista de lo cual, para la construcción de la segunda o más cámaras, las avispas toman como patrón las ondulaciones de la envoltura inmediatamente anterior superponiendo la nueva envoltura y cubriendo la abertura de acceso al nido de la cámara más antigua con la nueva envoltura. A medida que el nido crece, las avispas destruyen la parte superior de la envoltura y la parte inferior de la región donde se encontraba la entrada de acceso hasta dejar la envoltura truncada, que vista frontalmente se asemeja a un arco. In the following composite image you can see the progression of the development of a nest of the species Synoeca septentrionalis, from the a) the initial nest establishment, b) closing the envelope, c) a young pre-emergent single chamber to d) nest expansion through the construction of an additional chamber, to a e) large mature six-chambers nest. Note that unlike the massive 6- or 7-compartment nest of Synoeca surinama species, in which nest expansion was upward (indicated above in a composite image with a yellow arrow), in this case the nest expansion (six chambers or compartments) of Synoeca septentrionalis species was upward and to one side.

These wasps generally respond to the presence of insects at close distance, 10 to 15 centimeters from the nest, and produce a state of alarm. Depending on the proximity of the intruder, the degree of aggressiveness and the number of wasps on the envelope, among other factors, the response may be individual or collective excitation.

Excitation can last up to a maximum of 15 minutes. When a wasp on the envelope detects the presence of an intruder, the individual response is produced by opening and closing the wings and raising the abdomen. Upon opening and closing the wings, the wasps rapidly advance a stretch in a straight line or in circles, producing a buzzing sound with the wings, audible at a distance of 5 meters. During the advance, they hit other wasps with their heads and wings, exciting them, and they respond with the same behavior as those already excited. This process is slow as an alarm communication system among nest members, and in general, individual excitation dissipates quickly. Excitation is collective, when most of the wasps in the envelope detect the intruder and respond simultaneously by vibrating their wings and producing louder and more coordinated sounds and buzzes than in the individual case. The wasps inside the nest respond by emerging into the envelope, becoming excited and alarmed.

La excitación puede durar hasta un máximo de 15 minutos. Cuando una avispa sobre la envoltura detecta la presencia de un intruso, la respuesta individual se produce abriendo y cerrando las alas, y levantando el abdomen. Al abrir y cerrar las alas, las avispas avanzan rápidamente un tramo en línea recta o en círculos, produciendo un zumbido con las alas, audible a 5 metros de distancia. On the other hand, there is a state of permanent potential alarm in some individuals of the nest that remain in the envelope moving their wings periodically. When one or several wasps, of those considered potentially excited, move their wings, for example, by the arrival of other workers or by the flight of an insect in the vicinity of the nest, they hit the envelope producing 2 to 3 hits per second. Sometimes, the number of potentially excited wasps can reach ten, producing during this state buzzing and hitting the envelope without producing a general alarm. To produce a general alarm in the nest, the following factors are necessary: wing vibration, producing a prolonged buzzing sound 3 to 4 times per second, and envelope hitting, which is possibly one of the most influential factors in producing a general alarm among the individuals in the nest. The normal hitting frequency for a potentially excited individual is 2 to 3 hits per second, but to produce general excitement, the number of hits is 3 to 4 per second.

Por otro lado, existe un estado de alarma potencial permanente en algunos individuos del nido que permanecen en la envoltura moviendo las alas periódicamente.
