Improvising from knowledge / Improvisar desde el conocimiento

Reflections of a dancer.
Chapter 2
Improvising from knowledge

In recent days I wrote a note about the balance between emotionality and technique.

As artists, we are always in search of the utopian perfect way to transmit our emotions, thoughts or feelings through our art.

Whether it is the playing of instruments, singing, dancing, poetry or plastic arts, any form of art serves us as a means of communication.

But it is part of the artist's daily life to self-question his or her expressiveness.

One of the high points of art is the polarity between emotional expression and technical execution. Sometimes they look like twin brothers, other times like a couple with irreconcilable differences.

And the crucial moment where the meeting of these two elements is decisive is the moment of improvisation.

A space, an instant. Desired by the artist but at the same time intensely feared.

Performing without having something previously planned seems like a blessing and a curse contained in the same jar.

I have gone through many artistic expressions. Visual arts, singing, instruments and dance.

And I find that among dancers (amateur and professional) improvisation is a topic of sure discussion, as everyone resolves the fear of improvisation in a different way.

In so many years of career, I met dancers with excellent technique who stuttered when improvising and some others with a lot of emotion who were unable to transmit any emotion when improvising.

So, the question arises, how to improvise without panicking?

Experience has shown me that the best strategy (or at least, the best one I have found and the one I transmit to my students) is to improvise from knowledge.

The moment of improvisation allows the dancer (and the artist of any discipline) to let his emotionality flow more freely within a piece.

However, technical and aesthetic parameters must be maintained.

And the only way to achieve this delicate and uncertain balance is to incorporate into the subconscious the rules and techniques, so that they flow naturally without overshadowing the moment of emotional waste.

And that incorporation into the subconscious will only happen with excruciating and exhausting practice.

Practice, practice and more practice.

Practice the technique to incorporate it in a natural way, without having to think about it in order to fulfill its requirements and thus be able to include it in a performance of immediate creation, without cutting the special emotional flow that the piece must have at that moment.

Difficult: yes. Impossible: no.

The key is practice.

I apply it to dance. Do you think this is applicable in any other discipline?

I would like to know your point of view. I read you...

Capítulo 2
Improvisar desde el conocimiento

mi_imagen4.jpg

Yo he pasado por muchas expresiones artísticas.

Imposible: no.
