Hello everyone! My name is Juan Manuel Alvarez, and after some time already registered in Hive, I finally decide to introduce myself and start the interesting and challenging adventure of creating content on the blockchain.
Soy cubano, recibido en 2011 de Ingeniero en Ciencias Informáticas, aunque hace unos tres años, en un aparente giro de 180 grados, también me titulé como Máster en Estudios Sociopolíticos. En verdad, siempre me interesaron tanto las ciencias exactas —en especial Matemática y Física— como las sociales y humanísticas.
I am Cuban, graduated in 2011 as an Informatics Sciences Engineer, although about three years ago, in an apparent 180-degree turn, I also graduated with a Master's degree in Sociopolitical Studies. In truth, I have always been interested in the so called hard sciences —especially Mathematics and Physics- as well as the social and humanities.
Cuando finalicé mis estudios preuniversitarios en 2005, me decanté por la informática atraído por la magia de Internet. Entonces solía pagar por contenido offline de Orishas —mi grupo musical de cabecera en la adolescencia— en disquetes de 3½ pulgadas, y solo contemplaba cursar estudios superiores en una institución como la Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, que garantizara acceso de calidad —en aquel contexto y todavía hoy— a la red de redes.
When I finished my pre-university studies in 2005, I was attracted by the magic of the Internet, and so decided to go into computer science. At that time I used to pay for offline content of Orishas —my favorite music group as a teenager- on 3½-inch floppy diskettes, and so I only considered pursuing higher education at an institution like the Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, which guaranteed quality access -in that context and still today- to the big network.
Una vez graduado, tras par de años dedicado al desarrollo y despliegue de soluciones para la gestión institucional de Internet y sitios web, una curiosidad renovada en torno a temas sociales e históricos me llevó al mundo de las ciencias políticas, que me sigue motivando hasta hoy. Me desempeño como profesor en la misma universidad que me formó como ingeniero, pero impartiendo las asignaturas Teoría Política y Estudios Sociales de la Ciencia y la Tecnología. Contar con el reconocimiento y el aprecio de mis colegas es el mayor premio que pueda desear.
Upon graduation, after a couple of years dedicated to the development and deployment of solutions for Internet institutional management and websites, a reloaded curiosity about social and historical issues led me to the world of political science, which continues to motivate me to this day. I currently work as a professor at the same university that trained me as an engineer, although teaching Political Theory and Social Studies of Science and Technology. For me, the recognition and esteem of my colleagues are my most valued benefits.
Hobbies
Mis pasatiempos no son muy particulares. De tiempo en tiempo alguno pasa al primer lugar, pero siempre me acompañan la lectura, la música y el cine. En el primer caso, me muevo entre la literatura —sobre todo narrativa, y dentro de esta la novela—, los libros clásicos y contemporáneos de filosofía, política e historia, y las noticias. Siendo sincero, en los últimos años si acaso tengo tiempo para mantenerme al tanto de lo que pasa —a través de Twitter y agencias de información— con la política, la economía y las finanzas globales.
My hobbies are not very particular. From time to time one of them come to the first place, but for sure I am involved almost always with reading, music and cinema. In the first case, I move myself between literature -especially narrative, and within this the novel-, classic and contemporary books on philosophy, politics and history, and news. To be honest, in the last few years I only have had time to keep abreast of what's going on -through Twitter and news agencies- with global politics, economy and finance.
Con la música he mantenido una relación especial, primero como aficionado activo desde niño hasta que entré a la universidad —llegué a dominar guitarra, bajo, piano y todo el set de percusión, conservando muy buenos recuerdos de aquella etapa—, y luego como "crítico", aficionado también. Me gusta escuchar y bailar la música popular de mi país, pero no tengo fronteras: voy del jazz al reggaeton, buscando virtuosismo, ritmo y melodía.
I have maintained a special relationship with music, first as an active amateur since I was a child until I entered university -I mastered guitar, bass, piano and the whole percussion set, keeping very good memories of that stage-, and then as a "critic", also amateur. I like to listen and dance the popular music of my country, but I have no boundaries: I go from jazz to reggaeton, looking for virtuosity, rhythm and melody.
Del cine disfruto mucho las películas de acción, aunque hace un tanto que no me concentro en un filme, cualquiera sea el género. Sí me he convertido en todo un seriéfilo, en la medida que los avatares de la vida me lo permiten. Parto siempre de recomendaciones de usuarios y sitios especializados, con preferencia por las series de crimen, acción, orientadas a la política —como "House of Cards"— y la historia, y fantásticas tipo "Los Anillos del Poder".
I really enjoy action movies, although it's been a while since I've been able to concentrate on a film, whatever the genre. Istead, I have been more focused on series, to the extent that the vicissitudes of life allow me to do so. My search for a good serie starts with recommendations from users and specialized sites, with a preference for crime, action, political —like "House of Cards"— and historical focused, or fantasy series like "The Rings of Power".
Otra gran pasión son los deportes. Practiqué el baloncesto —e incluso algunas sesiones introductorias de lucha greco— hasta los 12 años, cuando tuve que decidir entre la música y las canastas. Cuando elegí la primera, la relación con mi padre —que enseñaba ese deporte en la rama femenil— llegó a ser tensa por algún tiempo, porque cierto era que no se me daba mal lo del básquet.
Con los años me quedé solo con la afición por los deportes, pasando principalmente por nuestro pasatiempo nacional aquí en Cuba —el béisbol—, y ya en la universidad abarcando otras disciplinas como el fútbol, el propio baloncesto y el boxeo.
Another great passion is sports. I played basketball -and even some introductory sessions of Greco wrestling style- until I was 12 years old, when I had to decide between music and baskets. When I chose the first one, the relationship with my father -who taught that sport in the female branch- became tense for some time, because it was true that I was not bad at all in basketball.
Over the years I was left alone with my love for sports, mainly through our national pastime here in Cuba -baseball-, and later in college I started following other disciplines such as soccer, basketball and boxing.

Hace ya tres años, mi mayor preocupación, pero también mi mejor pasatiempo, es mi hijo Manuel Ignacio.
For three years now, my biggest concern, but also my greatest hobby, has been my son Manuel Ignacio.
Todo lo que productivamente hago gira alrededor suyo, y me satisface y enorgullece que, Dios mediante, haya podido cumplir las exigencias que conlleva tener hijos en una época tan difícil, con desequilibrios importantes en materia de salud y economía.
Para mayor dicha, tengo una familia maravillosa. A mi esposa le debo la alegría de nuestro niño, su apoyo incondicional y una primera paternidad que asumí con mucho gusto y dedicación.
Everything I do productively is related with him, and I am very pleased and proud that, God through, I have been able to meet the demands of having children in such a difficult time, with major health and economic imbalances.
For better bliss, I have a wonderful family. To my wife I owe the joy of our child, her unconditional support and a first fatherhood that I assumed with great pleasure and dedication.
Mi madre es de esas que nunca te falla, y mi padre siempre me acompaña desde otra dimensión. Lo mismo aplica para el resto de mi parentela, dentro de la que cuento un núcleo que no es corto de amigos y amigas incondicionales. Soy un privilegiado que ve y encuentra la felicidad en todo lo que he venido describiendo hasta aquí.
My mother is one of those who never fails you, and my father always accompanies me from another dimension. The same applies to the rest of my family, within which I count a not short list of unconditional friends. I am a privileged person who see and find happiness in everything I have described so far.

Llegué hasta acá gracias al amigo @ertytux, quien me dio "las mieles" sobre este nanoclima, como diría el periodista argentino Juan Pablo Varsky. Se trata de una experiencia súper interesante en el entorno cripto, que a nosotros desde Cuba nos abre un conjunto de oportunidades estratégicas.
I got here thanks to my friend @ertytux, who talked me about this "nanoclimate", as the Argentine journalist Juan Pablo Varsky would say. It is a super interesting experience in the crypto environment, which opens up a set of strategic opportunities for us from Cuba.
Pero ha sido la edición más reciente del curso Hive desde Cero, coordinado por @soy-laloreto, lo que ha terminado de motivarme y brindarme las herramientas básicas para dar este paso. Entre tanto, he estado de manera silente insertado y aprendiendo también en la activa comunidad @hivecuba.
But it has been the most recent edition of the course Hive desde Cero, coordinated by @soy-laloreto, which has finally motivated myself, providing me the basic tools to take this step. In the meantime, I have been in silent mode but inserted and learning in the active community @hivecuba.
¿Qué pretendo aportar en Hive? Todo o por lo menos buena parte del conocimiento que he adquirido en un conjunto de temas que, presumo, serán de interés en algunas comunidades. Entre las ideas que quiero desarrollar están: ¿cómo construirte tu propio ecosistema informativo? ¿Cómo blindarte ante la abrumadora cantidad de información falsa o engañosa que está circulando?
What do I intend to contribute in Hive? All or at least a good part of the knowledge I have acquired in a set of topics that, I presume, will be of interest in some communities. Among the ideas I pretend to develop are: how to build your own information ecosystem? How to shield yourself against the overwhelming amount of false or misleading information that is circulating?
También tengo previsto para mis primeras publicaciones brindar soluciones para encontrar artículos científicos alojados en las bases de datos de referencias bibliográficas más prestigiosas, o acceder a sitios web que demandan suscripciones de pago —no sensibles al uso de VPN— para consumir determinado contenido premium o todo en general.
I also plan for my first publications to provide solutions to find scientific articles hosted in the most prestigious bibliographic references databases, or to access websites that require paid subscriptions -not sensitive to the use of VPN- to consume certain premium content or everything there in general.
A mediano plazo, quisiera iniciar en español un servicio informativo periódico para reflejar cómo determinados sucesos inciden regularmente en las finanzas a escala global y local, y particularmente en el valor de nuestras criptomonedas expresado en dólares. Ofrecer información rigurosamente curada sobre estos temas, podría ser útil para fortalecer la base que alienta nuestras decisiones en la economía digital, introduciendo fuentes de prestigio del tipo que leería el mismísimo Bobby Axelrod.
In the medium term, I would like to initiate in Spanish a periodic information service to reflect how certain events affect finance on a global and local scale, and particularly the value of our cryptocurrencies expressed in dollars. Offering rigorously curated information on these topics, could be useful in strengthening the foundation that drives our decisions in the digital economy, introducing reputable sources of the kind that would be read by Bobby Axelrod himself.
