Trabajar por el ambiente es algo que definitivamente me apasiona. Como saben mi carrera originalmente es en ciencias de la tierra y luego a nivel de postgrado estudié ciencias marinas. La ciencia forma una parte esencial en mi vida, sencillamente me encanta y me hace sentir muy buen tanto generar conocimientos como compartirlo con otros. Mostrarles lo poco que pueda saber y verlos crecer.

Ese gusto por el procesos de enseñanza/aprendizaje lo noté alguna vez mientras estudiaba y le explicaba a algunos de mis compañeros de estudio. En realidad fueron ellos los que notaron que tenía cualidades para enseñar. Yo no lo había notado.

Hoy precisamente recibí un par de notas de voz de una de mis amigas científicas, ella trabaja en paleoclima, para decirme que había visto parte del trabajo que estoy haciendo y que se sentía muy bien por mí porque había encontrado un espacio para lograr algo que verdaderamente me apasiona.

Ciertamente, siempre lo he comentado entre mis estudiantes. Le he dicho que ellos pueden sentir en un aula de clases que profesor está involucrado y apasionado con enseñar y que los investigadores que impartimos conocimiento por lo general lo disfrutamos mucho.

Recientemente, tuve la oportunidad luego de mucho tiempo de encierro y de planes postergados salir a una actividad de ciencia ciudadana que tenía algún tiempo en reposo. Aquí les cuento un poco sobre lo que logramos hacer y cómo me siento al respecto.

Trabajar por el ambiente me apasiona

Es importante que cada quien encuentre su pasión, algo que lo haga sentir pleno y que lo haga sentir bien. Algunos lo llaman misión de vida, otros propósito, otros un pocos más distraídos dejan pasar los días en plena desconexión de la realidad, sus sentimientos, sus emociones y aunque todo es válido porque es una elección, yo me he sentido mejor haciendo las cosas que me gustan.

Siempre he tenido la inclinación de abordar tópicos de investigación vinculados con el ambiente y de hecho he podido hacerlo. Desde mis inicios en el área de la contaminación atmosférica, me he movido por manejo de costas, contaminación orgánica, paleoclima, entre otros.

Pero esta línea de investigación que ahora desarrollo simplemente me encanta. Me ha tocado aprender mucho. Un aprendizaje continúo porque es un tema reciente y aún existen muchos vacíos de información. Hay mucho por hacer al respecto porque aún no se han establecido muchas cosas respecto a la contaminación plástica y los microplásticos.

He disfrutado mucho mi autoformación, y la forma que he venido creando para compartir los conocimientos. También ver a los jóvenes trabajando en temas que son de actualidad. Me falta bastante por lograr y por supuesto tener financiamiento para incrementar la escasa información que existe sobre el tema en nuestro país.

Algo que noté en el proceso es que era indispensable salirme del laboratorio y divulgar y tomar cartas en el asunto para aportar soluciones y a la vez que sigo investigando sobre el tema porque es imperante la necesidad que se tiene para resolver esta problemática.

Mi pasión tomó forma

Y así me dediqué a aprovechar todos los espacios posibles para ir llevando el mensaje. Comunicándoles a las personas del entorno académico o no sobre lo que pasa con los microplásticos, tratando de hacerles entender la gravedad del asunto y llevando un mensaje transformador para lograr el cambio en los patrones y estilos de vida tan necesario.

Así encontré mi pasión en esa combinación perfecta entre actividades de campo (muestreo y planificación), de laboratorio y jornadas de sensibilización y concientización. Esta fórmula me hace sentir muy bien. Hago mi mejor esfuerzo, doy lo mejor y sido trabajando en pro del ambiente con mi convicción firme de que la ciencia es algo indispensable para nuestras vidas y que mientras más logremos dar ese cambio será mejor.

Durante agosto y septiembre he estado desarrollando una serie de actividades charlas, talleres, limpiezas de playa y toma de muestras y me he sentido muy bien, con mucha energía y conexión, Estoy sumamente agradecida con aquellos que permitieron que el mensaje llegase, con todos los que me han apoyado y espero que sigan haciéndolo. Que todo se alinee para seguir ayudando a la Tierra. Este fin de semana es el día mundial de las playas y me voy con mi grupo de investigación a ayudar a limpiar un par de playas, a continuar soñado y a seguir con pasión trabajando por el ambiente. Working for the environment is something I am definitely passionate about. As you know my career was originally in earth sciences and then at the graduate level, I studied marine sciences. Science is an essential part of my life, I simply love it and it makes me feel great to both generate knowledge and share it with others. Show them what little I can know and watch them grow.

I noticed that taste for the teaching/learning process once while I was studying and explaining it to some of my fellow students. Actually, they were the ones who noticed that I had the qualities to teach. I had not noticed it.

Just today I received a couple of voice notes from one of my scientist friends, she works in paleoclimate, to tell me that she had seen some of the work I am doing and that she felt very good for me because I had found a space to accomplish something that I am truly passionate about.

Certainly, I have always talked about it among my students. I have told him that they can feel in a classroom that the professor is involved and passionate about teaching and that we researchers who impart knowledge usually enjoy it very much.

Recently, I had the opportunity after a long time of confinement and postponed plans to go out to a citizen science activity that had been on hiatus for some time. Here I tell you a bit about what we got to do and how I feel about it.

Working with and for the environment I am passionate about

It is important that everyone finds their passion, something that makes them feel fulfilled and makes them feel good. Some call it life mission, others call it purpose, others a few more distracted let the days go by in full disconnection from reality, their feelings, their emotions, and although everything is valid because it is a choice, I have felt better doing the things I like.

I have always had the inclination to tackle research topics linked to the environment and in fact, I have been able to do so. Since my beginnings in the area of atmospheric pollution, I have moved into coastal management, organic pollution, paleoclimate, among others.

But this line of research that I am now developing, I simply love it. I have learned a lot. Continuous learning because it is a recent topic and there are still many gaps in information. There is a lot to do about it because many things have not yet been established regarding plastic pollution and microplastics.

I have really enjoyed my self-training, and the way I have been creating to share the knowledge. Also seeing young people working on issues that are topical. I still have a lot to accomplish and of course, have funding to increase the scarce information that exists on the subject in our country.

Something that I noticed in the process is that it was essential to get out of the laboratory and disseminate and take action on the issue to provide solutions and at the same time I continue researching on the subject because it is imperative the need that exists to solve this problem.

My passion took shape

And so I dedicated myself to take advantage of all possible spaces to carry the message. Communicating to people in the academic environment or not about what is happening with microplastics, trying to make them understand the seriousness of the issue, and bringing a transformative message to achieve the change in patterns and lifestyles are so necessary.

Thus I found my passion in that perfect combination of field activities (sampling and planning), laboratory activities, and awareness-raising days. This formula makes me feel very good. I do my best, I give my best and I have been working for the environment with my firm conviction that science is something indispensable for our lives and that the more we achieve this change, the better it will be.
