Changing the focal length in lightpainting

There is nothing like an epiphany where you realise that during a long exposure, you can change your focal length. I've been fascinated by zoom pulling for some time and the wildly different and totally unique effects created.

Follow your own light

From a lightpainting / urbex trip to a cool ammunition dump in Wales where I had the pleasure to meet up with some of the UK's finest and most talented light painters. Zoom pulling faffery backlit with an LED Lenser X21r2 torch.

Inside every hoodie is another hoodie trying to escape

Not quite a zoom pull but a change of focal length in total darkness. I'm still impressed by @fadetoblack's dedication to help achieve the shot by wearing a dark hoodie on backwards on a warm night! Note to self, we must do this again!

Zoom pulling with a spinning firework

For this shot, the model stood as still as possible while a firework was spun on a drill. Without ending the exposure, a continuous light source was switched on and I simultaneously zoomed out in steps on the zoom ring. This kind of shot takes teamwork to make sure just the right amount of light hits the sensor.

A fortunate sequence of events

This was a totally unplanned shot with @fadetoblack. Our original location had to change due to an illegal rave about to happen! We came up with a "Plan B" and drove to another location I knew nearby. The wall behind Tim was a metal perforated shutter which looked cool when lit from behind. It looked more three dimensional when zoomed during the exposure.

All shot in one photographic exposure, these images are not Photoshop creations!

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
