The Flamboyant males! My entry for SMAP #67 - Male birds

Ladies are usually more colorful? Not so in Avian world ...😀

Men do not dress up in colorful clothes and in general are usually drab in appearance compared to women. At least, that is the general belief. In the world of birds, the situation is reverse in many cases.

Here is my latest picture that proves it. What can be more flamboyant than this amazing Peacock ..

The long tail with lowing green color, with a pattern of 1000 eys, it's crest, deep blue color of body contrasting with orange wings ...

All this to impress the peahens...

It is not that only the Peacock is lone example. Male birds of many different species sport a 'breeding plumage' which is so colorful and flamboyant that it dazzles the eyes.

Take a look at this Strawberry finch male for example. Isn't he impressive?

Most raptors do not really develop any special plumage for breeding but as it is, the males sport a different 'hairdo' compared to females.

For an example - this common kestrel male has a dark grey head whereas the females have same pale coloring as on their body, on their head...

Another flamboyant male bird is the paradise flycatcher. The male is almost identical to females but sports a super long tail what waves around like a gymnast's ribbon when he flies...
