For this round of the Show Me A Photo contest, I'd like to submit this photo of a couple of mute swans (Cygnus olor) with their young gosling swimming among the water lilies in a local inland lake near my home.
The pair of adult swans have been a familiar sight over the last several months as they have taken up residence on this particular lake, but this was my first time spotting their newest gosling. In the months prior, I had photographed the same pair as they fed along the shoreline, dove for algae on the lake bottom, and fended off any Canadian geese that dared to make their way too close to the swans' nest. Clearly protective of their new family member, the swans quickly retreated to the thicket of vegetation that lined the water's edge as I approached to take my pictures. Thankfully I was able to capture a few good shots before they hid!
