Feathered Friends SMAP Contest Entry: Ravens

My entry to ‘Show Me A Photo Contest’ Round 58 which is hosted by @nelinova. Check Here for more information.

Theme

Corvids (Corvidae)

Corvids are from the crow family and this extents to a large variety of birds including the raven.

I have a couple ravens that visit my backyard in search of food.

Ravens are cautious and land on the barn roof to survey the situation before coming down to the ground for the bread.

I toss out homemade bread with either a bit of jam or peanut butter for them.

A little snow on the bread doesn’t bother the raven. I believe the birds need help finding food in the winter and try to leave something for them. Nothing goes to waste in my house ~any leftovers also go to the birds.

The raven goes back to the barn roof with his treasure to eat it in peace away from the bluejays who squawk at him from a safe distance.

This is probably the same raven in the summertime trying to get all the bread in his mouth. He organizes it to get as much as possible before the blue jays get any. I’m not sure if he can take to the air with that load.

There is always a competition between the blue jays and the raven over the food. I also put out bird seed and dry cat food for the birds.

In the first photo of the collage the blue jay is trying to stare the raven down. Blue jay knows enough to not get too close ~that’s a mighty big beak on the raven.

I have many photos of the raven and will close with a old photo from my archives of his silhouette in the air.
