🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

📚 Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
📚 major (lat.) big

It is not uncommon to meet this bird in winter. These guys are always in the forests, even when there are no other birds. They diligently search the trees in search of insects hiding in them.

However, in winter they eat not only insects, which, by the way, are not so easy to find. In addition to them, they eat seeds, and to a greater extent these are the seeds of coniferous trees.

The woodpecker hollows out a special hole in the tree, called the "forge". Woodpeckers insert cones into these holes to make it easier for them to get seeds out of them.
