🦉 The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), also known as the Eurasian kingfisher and river kingfisher

📚 Alcedo alcedo, alcedinis, alcyon, или halcedo, halcedinis (lat) - the word "hals" in ancient Greek. language meant "sea", along with the word thalassa. In ancient Greek. mythology Alcyone (Alcyone), daughter of the god of winds Aeolus, was a wife Keix, who drowned due to the wrath of the gods. Alcyone threw herself into the sea in grief and also died. The gods took mercy and turned the spouses into kingfishers. While looking for her husband, Alcyone calls out “Keix! Keix! ”And dives, trying to find him in the sea.

One of my favorite birds! Just look at these colors, these feathers! Every spring, in May, near the river and in the ravine where the stream flows, I meet a couple of these birds. In these places, they dig holes in the steep coastal slopes. These birds are not very clean, they do not remove droppings and pellets after their nestlings , so every year they dig new holes.
Here is one of these holes on the 2nd photo. Inside it, a female is already sitting on eggs, but this will be discussed in a future post.
