🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

  • Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
  • major (lat.) big

Now the birds are actively mating season. Males perform courtship rituals for the female. And you can even hear it from afar, as males sing mating songs. Woodpeckers do not sing songs; they drum on wood (or other surfaces).

After the formation of a pair, the male hollows out the housing. Both parents hatch the eggs, taking turns.
With the arrival of autumn they participate in mixed bird flocks. They chisel trees in search of insects and listen to the voices of other birds. And those other birds inspect the fallen wood chips for insects.
