Walking and birds spotting January 2022

Hello feathered friends.

The new year started with snow and cold weather, which lasted throughout January. Occasional sunny periods raised the daytime temperature, while the nights were mostly icy. I spent the least time of all months walking in nature, both because of the cold and because of frequent trips.

During this period I've found 24 different bird species of which 1 is completely new.

Black redstart

Since the beginning of winter, I have rarely noticed them. In January, I saw only one bird at a location where I had often seen them in the previous period.

Blue tit

They can usually be found in small groups or individually around the perimeter of the place where I live and the nearby pond.

Coal tit

This species of bird appeared in early winter, and can only be seen on conifer trees. I've noticed only one group of about ten birds.

Collared dove

I mostly meet them in pairs in the middle of the canopy of various trees.

Common buzzard

I usually meet them in flight, in or outside the populated areas. It is currently the most numerous daily predator.

Common chaffinch

They are present in small numbers, most often in forested areas.

Common gull

It is very rarely seen in these parts at this time of year. I photographed it in Belgrade during one of my visits.

Common kestrel

Unlike the summer when they were the most numerous, I only managed to notice this species only once.

Pygmy cormorant

The photo was taken in Belgrade. Two pygmy cormorants resting by the bridge pillar.

Great cormorant

Another species that I photographed during my visit to Belgrade.

Great grey heron

The young specimen of this species is a regular resident of the pond that I often visit. Snow and ice don't seem to bother him too much.

Great tit

It is the most numerous songbird at the moment. It can be noticed and heard all around.

Hooded crow

It is not so common during the winter, because it spends time in larger cities.

House sparrow

Only a few groups of these birds can be seen in a few locations. Their numbers have drastically decreased.

Jackdaw

Together with rooks, they represent the most numerous species of birds at the moment. With them, they form large flocks and occupy the tops of trees.

Little owl

It is present throughout the year and can be noticed occasionally during the day.

Long-eared owl

During the winter, it is the most numerous nocturnal predator, and during the day it can be seen on trees exclusively in the central part of populated areas.

Magpie

The usual position for these birds is the top of the tree from where they observe the environment in search of food.

Mallard

This species of duck is the most numerous wild duck. It can be seen on lakes, ponds, canals, and rivers.

A new kind of tit that I hadn't seen before.

Rook

Although they are in large groups, sometimes individuals stand out while searching for food.

Tree sparrow

They are much more numerous than house sparrows. But unlike them, they can only be seen outside populated areas, mostly grouped on bushes.

Woodpecker

And finally, the woodpecker is another species that can be found all year round.
