You wouldn't be surprised if you see another post about storks, I guess. I mentioned before, storks are among my favourite birds. There are white and black storks that can be seen here, but the black are more rare. In August the storks begin to gather and start their migration to spend the winter in warmer places in the south.
Over the last two weeks we observed the flocks and I think I have never seen so many. Today was not an exception. When I thought that maybe there will be no more and the massive flock appeared again. The storks are moving with the thermals and they soar in the sky slowly, swirling up until they reach the cold air and move forward until the next thermal.
If you recall, once or twice I also mentioned that I am fortunate to live on one of the main bird migratory routes called Via Pontica. All I need is to look up and there they are, flying above my home.
The best is to see them flying low and after zooming the images to find interesting features, like this one with missing feathers on the wing. What it could be, to make him loose them? I think it is male, but it could well be female.
Another one flying close also seems to have similar fate.
I cannot show an image that can give you an idea of how immense and incredible the flock is. Next is just a small fraction of the flock. Believe me they were hundreds if not thousands and stretched in miles.
Just think each day, several times (one day hubby counted 11 flocks) how many storks fly above us. I searched the net if I could find the numbers of storks migrating and it apperead that they are around 400 000!
I wonder if this weekend I will see more. All I can say is that I will look forward to seeing them return in spring and welcome them back. Now I wish them safe journey.
