Fall begins today in the Northern Hemisphere. Plants and trees are slowing down, as sunlight decreases, to get ready for the colder season ahead. Birds and butterflies have begun to migrate.
This young Rose-breasted Grosbeak will be leaving soon.
And so will the Ruby throated Hummingbirds
Autumn has caught us in our summer wear..
–Philip Larkin, British poet (1922–86)
Today was a lovely summer-like day in Wisconsin, but when you look around there are more and more signs of Autumn.
Autumnal equinox is when the Sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are close to equal length.
After the autumnal equinox, the Sun begins to rise later and nightfall comes sooner. We will have to wait until the December solstice for days to start to grow longer and nights shorter.
