Hello all,
I would like to present the Ruddy Duck as my entry into the Bill/Beak theme photo contest this week. The bright blue of the breeding male's beak is extraordinary to see in person and I felt like it was unique enough to be entered into consideration. I suspect the color is caused by seasonal changes in their horomones but I couldn't find a definitive answer.
Their courtship display is always amusing to watch as the males stick their tails straight up and drum this bills against their chest rapidly.
