Reflections of a Waterthrush (SMAP Round 48)

This week's Feathered Friends SMAP contest theme is: Reflections of Birds

My entry: A Northern Waterthrush in Massachusetts

The above photo is a Northern Waterthrush that was freshly arrived in Cambridge, MA after a night of flying north. I found this bird along a small brook in a maple and oak forest. I spent a while watching it pick along the water looking for food. Above us were the songs and calls of other warblers; American Redstarts, Northern Parulas, and Black-throated Greens fighting each other for territory. It was more calm on the ground.

The reflection of the bird came out well as the water was very slow moving and shaded from above. You can see the yellowish tint on the bird's chest and eyebrow even in the reflection as well its pink legs and brown streaking. The density of the streaking is one way to tell the Northern Waterthrush apart from its relative the Louisiana Waterthrush (which is a more southerly species but some individuals do make it to New England).

Here's a photo of the bird mid-tailbob. Waterthrushes tailbob as they walk around like little Spotted Sandpipers. That always gives me a smile :)

Cheers!
