American Robin (SMAP Round 18: Bird in Grass)

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush but what is a bird in the grass worth?

For this week's Show Me a Photo I present the humble American Robin (Turdus migratorius). It is one of the most familiar bird on the North American continent and is often overlooked, especially now during spring migration, in favor of more flashy neotropical migrants.

However, the male actually has quite a lovely plumage during this time of year where his black feathers pop against his bright orange belly and his white eye-ring is showing the most vibrancy.

Being a thrush, they spend a lot of their time on the ground, in the grass looking for invertebrates to snatch up and deliver to their young at the nest.

Good birding!
