about 20 km from our house in southern maharashtra lies the village of parabwada. the road to the village passes through a small marsh providing an ideal place for observing birds. on one side the grassy wetlands border on rich farmland. the other side is deeper and feeds into a small river which empties into the arabian sea. there are numerous species of birds swimming in the deeper areas while the jungle behind that area is habitat to many arboreal species but today i shall focus on some of the waders on the grassy side.

the glossy ibis are usually the most numerous and they keep together as a flock. there are several species of egrets which are far more likely to stray from the flock. while the grey herons and pond herons tend to be more on their own.

on the whole the different species are quite amicable

while especially the ibis are very intent on finding water insects, frogs, and small fish the much larger greater egret seems more laid back

glossy ibis often appear a dull blackish brown so one might wonder why the are named glossy but when the light is right we can see flashes of shiny green and bronze and when the spread their wings more of their true colors are fully revealed

a few splashes during the occasional quarrel amongst the more rambunctious is only to be expected

but in the presence of other species the scene tends to be remarkably peaceful

maybe it has to do with the size and posture of the grey heron

okay. that was great but it's time to go but we'll be back for sure.
