The FUT, we call him, the magestic feathered friends in the pont nearby. The grebe. The Great Crested Grebe, Podiceps cristatus - Grebes (Podicipedidae)source from Wikipedia.
The grebe is the most common species of grebe in our country. The sound they make is the only thing you see because the swim underwater and go away fast when we come by. It occurs as a breeding bird in all kinds of waters, from city parks and canals to dune lakes, wetlands, edges of large waters and river nature.

The largest numbers are found in the Low Netherlands. But here in Rotterdam and in the forests we have they are aswell, and they are a sight for sore eyes. Grebes sometimes mate early in the year with spectacular courtship rituals. I missed the ritual BUT I spotted the offspring in the eggs in the water this morning. Well recognizable in this period of early summer clothing by a white masked head with a brown-red wreath, overflowing in black, and elongated, black head feathers. Eyes bright red. Top side brown, bottom side white. Male and female are identical but I think that the breeders that are on the nest show their wreath. In winter their feathers are pale brown and white, with black head feathers. Youngsters are striped black and white.

As I said they are noisy during the breeding season. Territorial and really shy. The have a long breeding season from March to October, most brood during May-June.
And I found her this morning in the shallow waters while walking the dogs. The number of eggs are on an average 3-4, I think I saw 4 today.

I looked up some numbers they have :
Usually one brood, sometimes second when young first litter are 6-7 weeks old.
Incubation time: 25-29 days.
Nest on platform in water, fixed to vegetation or branch, preferably well hidden in reeds.
Young quickly leave the nest and are kept warm on their backs of parent birds.
They are fed by the parents for another 10-11 weeks.

Breeding area consists of all types of natural and constructed fresh to brackish waters from 0.5 to about 5 meters deep with enough fish. Preference for sloping banks with vegetation and not too dense underwater vegetation. Like the part I photographed. Except in swamps, on lakes and other waters in the countryside, also in urban areas. Also occurs in a saltwater environment outside the breeding season.

They eat mainly fish, to a lesser extent invertebrates. Fish are caught diving in water with not too dense underwater vegetation. Various fish species, including roach, bleak, dace, gudgeon, rudd, bream, stickleback. But also the river lobsters we have here hahah. Fishing depth are about 2-4 meters. After the breeding season, the breeding area is usually abandoned.

In late summer wing moult in large groups on large, open waters such as the IJsselmeer, Randmeren, waters in the Delta area (including Grevelingen) and the Waddenzee. In winter also large numbers (thousands) on the North Sea. With persistent frost, the importance of coastal areas increases. Birds from Northern and Northeastern Europe migrate. Ofcourse I am not a birdie I am a #featheredfriend and lover of nature but I also have a source : https://www.vogelbescherming.nl/ontdek-vogels/kennis-over-vogels/vogelgids/vogel/geoorde-fuut

This is the second nest with only one egg. I didn’t see the mother unfortunately.
I will keep an eye out and see what will happen, and if she will return.
